Page 55 of Burn It Down

I cursed at my body working against me, willing me to rest, to take it easy.

Did it not know by now that I didn’t operate that way?

That I fucking well couldn’t.

Get with the program!

I put my phone down, but had to slap my hand to the nightstand to stabilize myself immediately afterward.

“Come on,” I gritted out.

It had me forced to sit down on the bed for several minutes, postponing my shower even further.

When I was finally able to move, I stayed seated while I divested myself of my black tee and pajama pants, until I was just down to my boxers. I pushed back to my feet with a ridiculous amount of effort, then staggered across the bedroom into the bathroom.

I shut the door, then walked to the mirror over the sink, taking in the many dressings all over my body.

It was going to take an age to remove them all before I climbed into the shower.

“Fuck,” I muttered, turning away and stumbling to the shower itself.

I braced one hand on the bathtub and strained to turn the tap on with the other.

I only managed the hot tap before I had to pull back and take a beat.

Son of a bitch!

That was going to be the least of it. By the time I removed all the dressings, that would be all the physical exertion I could take, and then the shower would be off the table.

The urge to smash my fist into the fucking mirror was unbelievably intense.

But I swallowed it down, knowing that the easier I took it, the quicker I’d heal, and wouldn’t be in this frustratingly physically compromised state any longer.

A roar escaped me, the frustration of it all exploding out of me.

“You need help?”

I started at the sound of Jonah’s voice coming through the bathroom door.

“Maybe.” There wasn’t much choice right now.

The door opened in the next moment and Jonah came in.

He closed the door behind him, then went to lock it.

“No!”

Shit, the yell had left me before I’d been able to stop it.

He opened the door again, then turned back to me, wincing. “Sorry, I didn’t think about that.”

“It’s nothing,” I said, waving my hand dismissively. “Go ahead, shut it. Lock it too if you want.”

The look on his face made it clear he was seeing right through my façade, and he didn’t move to shut it, knowing what I really needed.

He walked to the shower and drew back just before touching the running water. “This is scalding.”

“I couldn’t turn the thing again, couldn’t lean all the way over to fix it.”
