Page 57 of Burn It Down

I just… I just needed some time to move past it, to find a way to bury it the way I buried everything else that could compromise my ability to lead, to be the man they needed me to be.

I sat down on the toilet seat and let him take off my dressings.

He was very careful, his fingers barely even brushing my skin.

I couldn’t stand the silence, though.

It made my mind wander.

I’d had to keep it locked up so tightly in that cell that now it all wanted to be let loose.

I was struggling to stop the onslaught.

And silence really didn’t help with that.

So, I found myself asking, “Anything of note happen here while I was gone?”

“Aside from the obvious, you mean? Like us running around like chickens with our heads cut off without you being here to hold it all together?”

“You did admirably, Jonah.”

“Debatable, but thanks. You know how I can’t resist bathing in your compliments.”

I looked over my shoulder to see his eyes lit up.

It really did make a difference to him. He needed to hear it more from me. I’d make sure I remedied that.

“So?” I continued. “What else?”

“I managed to reel a hella volatile Kill in,” he said, with a chuckle.

“Impressive.”

“I thought so, yeah.”

“How did you handle being in such close quarters with Caleb?”

His fingers stilled halfway to peeling off another gauze pad.

“Not so well?” I assumed from his noticeable reaction.

“I wasn’t his biggest fan at first, but we hashed it out. I know he’s here for your best interests, and that’s all I needed to be sure about.”

I frowned. Something didn’t add up here. “And?”

“And when we talked, I got to understanding him and what’s between you two.”

As he finished up with my back, he came around to my front to deal with the rest.

That was when I caught the look in his eyes. The fact that he couldn’t hold my gaze while we discussed this subject matter. “He had you purge your pain and demons,” I realized aloud.

“Yeah, I mean—”

I grasped his wrist. “Good.”

“Good?”

I nodded. “You needed the comfort and you were able to get that through him.”
