“Start talking,” I ordered, looking for my USB stick with my software.
“I... he was upset... so I... then we...”
I stopped and turned back to look at her. She looked so flustered that I started laughing. I walked over and sat down on the bed next to her.
“Let’s try this,” I said, grabbing her hand. “Is this the first time?”
“Yes... well, the first night,” she said, blushing fiercely, making me laugh.
“Good for you,” I said, meaning every word of it. “Did you mark each other?”
“Not yet. I want... I want to get Molly used to the idea first.” I grinned and rolled my eyes. “Okay, yes, that’s a cop-out. Molly is one step away from calling him Dad. I’m just trying to get used to it all.”
“There’s nothing wrong with that, Zi. You deserve this. Have you guys talked about what you’re doing after you mark?” I asked.
“What do you mean?”
“Like, have you thought about moving into the pack house instead of living here, or is he moving here with you?” I clarified. I wanted her and Molly back where I was near them.
“A little. I think I want to stay here, and he’s willing to move for me, but I don’t know yet. I haven’t made up my mind.” I hid a little bit of disappointment. I didn’t want to influence her decisions. This was a huge step for her, and I was beyond happy for both of them.
“Does Molly know James is your mate?”
“Yes, we told her, but I don’t think she understands what it means past the fact that we get to see him every day.”
“And... how was it?” I asked, then remembered it was James she was mated to. “Wait, no, I don’t want to know how good a lay my cousin is. I just hope you’re happy.” I said, giving her a hug after shuddering at the thought.
I got back up and continued looking for my USB. I finally found it at the bottom of my drawer and put it in my pocket.
“What about you and Cory?” she asked.
“What do you mean?” I said. It was pretty obvious to everyone that we were fully marked and mated, and I was already living there.
“How are you guys getting on? We haven’t had a chance to talk about it at all.” I sighed happily and went to sit back down next to her.
“Honestly, Zi, it’s everything I tried to stop myself from dreaming. I love him. So much.”
“I knew you were mates.” She smiled wickedly at me.
“What do you mean?”
“Oh, please, Evie. I’m pretty sure you and Cory were the only ones that didn’t know about your feelings for each other. Some were surprised you were mates because they thought you’d already done full moons together, and even I briefly wondered if something had gone wrong with your pairing, but everyone knew you two were in love with each other.”
“How?” I asked, dumbfounded. I thought I was pretty subtle about my feelings. Zi rolled her eyes, grabbed my hand, and dragged me to the kitchen, where James was fully dressed now, cutting up a couple of strawberries so Molly wouldn’t complain about breakfast before we got back to the pack house. Zi went to the pantry, pulled out most of the snacks in the cupboard I designated as my snack shelf when we moved in and dropped them all on the table. She pointed at it all like it was somehow supposed to make sense to me.
“What?” I said, looking at her confused.
“For a genius, your own peculiarities sometimes go right over your head. Look at it all. Everything you buy and eat. Your favorite candy.” She picked up a bag of green apple jolly ranchers. “Your favorite snack.” She picked up a box of green apple breakfast bars. “Your favorite fruit.” She pointed to a bowl of green apples.
“I like green apples. What about it? I’ve liked them since I was a kid.”
“Goddess, even I saw this one. Evie, Cory’s scent is green apples and some flowery shit,” James answered.
“Lotus” I clarified, while Tozi giggled in my head.
How did you never make that connection? she asked.
I never thought about it! I said, blushing and furiously trying to rationalize my love of green apples. I picked up a fruit roll-up to distract myself, and Zi just laughed. I looked down at the candy and realized out of the two flavors found in the box, I grabbed the green apple one.
