“Poor Xochil. I hope she’s okay,” I said. I hadn’t seen her in almost six years, but while she was a smart-ass, she was always a good friend to count on. She was family.

“Yeah,” he said, looking into the distance.

“You wanted to talk?” I asked.

“I... well, I know you said you didn’t want to date until things settled down for you, but everything that’s happening lately—” He took a deep breath before continuing. “—I was wondering if I could change your mind.”

“Paolo...” I started, knowing exactly what he was asking of me.

“Evie, things are happening. Everything is escalating. If they can attack an alpha, no one is safe. I don’t want to think about what could be. I want to try. I can make you happy,” he said, grabbing my hand.

“You have a mate out there, Paolo. So do I,” I said, pulling my hand away gently.

“I’m almost thirty, Evie, and I’ve traveled all over. I don’t think there’s a mate for me out there. All I’m asking is for a chance. One date. Let me take you out. If you don’t feel anything for me, I’ll leave you alone,” he begged.

“Paolo, I don’t feel that for you anymore.”

“One date. I’m asking for one date to see if we have something. We were good together, Evie. Weren’t we?” he asked, taking my hand again. I didn’t want to do this, and in the back of my mind, Tozi was telling me not to do it; that it wouldn’t change anything.

“If there’s nothing between us, we go back to friends, and you drop this?” I asked.

“One date.” He nodded. “Give me one date to show you I can make you happy.”

Don’t, Evie, Tozi warned.

It’s just to show him there’s nothing between us. It’ll end all of this back and forth, I told her, and she snarled and put up a block.

“One date. Tomorrow,” I told him.

“That doesn’t give me much time to plan,” he said, frowning.

“You can’t plan chemistry, Paolo. One date. Pick me up tomorrow at five.”

“I won’t make you regret this,” Paolo said, getting up with a smile on his face.

I already do, I thought. I sat on the bench for a few more minutes alone before I gave up and went home to sleep.

I woke up in a bad mood, and even Molly couldn’t cheer me up.

“Alright, what’s going on?” Zi asked as she made us coffee before Molly was awake. “You haven’t even hounded me for details on my date, and you look like you murdered a puppy.”

“I agreed to go on a date with Paolo tonight,” I said.

“Oh, but you don’t look too happy about it,” she pointed out.

“I don’t feel anything for him,” I told her.

“He’s the ex-boyfriend, right?” she asked, and I nodded. “So if you already know it won’t work, why did you accept?”

“He said he wanted one chance to prove that we could be happy, and he’d leave me alone if he couldn’t.”

“So, you’re going so he can see you don’t want him?”

I nodded.

“Evie... that’s manipulation,” she sighed, sitting on the table with me.

Fucking told you, Tozi said shortly before she blocked me again.
