This one. Yes, this one is going to be my dragoness.

…If she doesn’t kill me first.

Chapter 6

“Marli, I’d appreciate it if you got off of my councilman. I need you to work with him, not rip his throat out.” Jori’s panicked voice registered through the haze of instinct that triggered her need to subdue her enemy before he harmed her loved ones.

She shook off whoever tugged on her arm. Her human hands extended to her dazzling purple dragon claws, trained on Stenlen Flintail’s muscular throat.

The rogue grinned up at her. She could sever his head from his shoulders—maybe with some effort—and he grinned at her.

“Marli!” Odson’s bark cleared the last wisps of offensive need.

As she leaned back on her haunches, her bottom brushed against her enemy’s hardened groin. Her nostrils flared, taking in his scent as heat ripped down through her core to meet his erection.

He chuckled, “You are a fierce one. I like you.”

Marli shot to her feet, hissing and backing away from him, “Don’t touch me.”

Jori offered a hand to pull Stenlen to his feet.

As soon as he was upright, he put up his hands in a placating gesture, “Hey, I wasn’t the one doing the touching.”

Her gaze involuntarily dropped to his groin. She raised her still-clawed hands.

He was twice her size, but that didn’t mean she wouldn’t go down swiping and slashing if provoked.

“Marli, retract your claws. Jori’s right, we need you to work with him.” Kymri ordered.

At Kymri’s command, Marli hesitantly obeyed.

Until recently, Kymri had been Marli’s commander in the Aeleftherian guardian fleet.

“Work with him? You’ve got to be fucking kidding me, right? Right, Kymri? There’s no way in dragons-hell that I’m experiencing this. The male funk in this place is melting my brain and I’m delusional.” Marli gaped, gaze swiveling from Kymri to Jori to Stenlen and back.

“Male funk?” Jori’s brows went up, nostrils flaring. “I thought it was just Kymri’s pregnancy that made her sensitive to smells.”

“You’re not delusional. This is happening.” Kymri said, hands on hips.

“I’m very hygienic,” Stenlen growled, a fierce scowl souring his handsome features.

Marli flipped a hand, palm out, in Stenlen’s direction, raising her own brows as she stared back at Kymri.

“Not helping,” Jori said to Stenlen.

“Everyone in Black River has been driving themselves into the ground to find and rescue you from these dragons. And now you’re all just buddies.” Marli pinched the bridge of her nose as fatigue suddenly chased away the adrenaline of finally reuniting with her friend and seeing for herself that she was safe.

“She hasn’t slept much since you disappeared.” Odson said. “None of us have.”

Kymri strode up to Marli, taking her hands in hers. “I’m sorry that you’ve all exhausted yourselves. And I am so thankful that you were searching for us. It was a very dire situation. We are incredibly lucky that things landed in our favor and we can have this meeting now.” Kymri searched Marli’s face. “This—being able to work together—is a good thing.”

Exhausted, Marli held Kymri’s direct gaze, absorbing her words.

She’d been on edge since the moment they realized she was missing, up to this very second.

Tears blurred her vision.

Blinking them away, she tilted her head up and nodded.
