He’d been aiming to land on the terrace and hadn’t quite made it.

Goddess, I can’t believe the windows haven’t shattered from an impact so close!

He was the biggest frikking dragon she’d ever seen in her life. Bigger than Odson. The sheer size of him made her heart pound and she was nearly knee-droppingly thankful to the goddess that he was on their side.

Had Kargassa succeeded in turning him to his own devices… no, she wouldn’t even think about it.

But, a massive dragon that didn’t know how to use his wings? No wonder the valley was ripped apart.

At least this was a section of the mountains that wasn’t inhabited—as far as anyone knew.

If it had been, it likely wasn’t anymore.

“Just take a little break. Twenty minutes. Then you can go back out.” Kymri shot Marli a wide-eyed glance. “I’ll ask Odson to bring you in.”

His growl reverberated along the stone.

Kymri threw up her hands. “Okay, fine. I won’t.”

“I’ll go back to the council room,” Marli volunteered.

At Kymri’s nod, Marli made her way inside and through to the books that still lay strewn across the tables, with their page flags and sticky notes.

Two of her favorite human inventions, alongside the discovery of coffee and chocolate.

“Have you found the proper procedure for the order of which banners go where yet?” she asked Odson, who stood by the windows, holding a large tome over each forearm and squinting at the scripts.

“No, I left that for Eamerson. He likes that sort of detail. I’m looking for something else.”

She sidled up to him, peering at the pages. “What is it?”

“I read something in Kargassa’s autobiography—don’t bother, by the way, it’s mostly fiction as far as I can tell. But this one section caught my eye, so I’m trying to cross reference it.”

“Which is?”

He leveled his gaze on her face for a long moment, undecided if he should tell her.

The hairs on her nape rose. “What is it, Odson? What’s wrong?”

“I’m not sure yet. I need to find an old map of the dragon territories. Old, from before Aeleftheria’s relocation.”

“There’s one in the library. I was looking at it while we were waiting for Eamerson’s list.” Sten said, leaning across the table for the bowl of mixed nuts.

“I’ll get it. What’s the title?”

Sten shrugged, popping several nuts into his mouth.

“Where was it?” she huffed.

“I’ll go. I’ll know it when I see it again.” He brushed his hands clean and turned for the door.

Glancing back toward the other room, she rushed toward the elevator, murmuring, “I think we can get back before Jori does so that we don’t miss what Odson has to say.”

Sten caught up to her, hitting the button before she did.

In the last few days, they’d kept their distance, working alongside the others to plan the funeral as efficiently as possible.

Time, and solid sleep, had allowed her to adjust to the new situation, observing Stenlen, observing the others around him. And Eamerson too, and the various deputies that came and went.
