Everything happened in slow motion. Sten scrambled forward at the same moment Marli did.

Jori came out of his spin, massive wings snapping open like sails caught on a hurricane. He teetered, catching himself, but couldn’t hold the position as he put his feet out to grasp a swathe of rock.

Marli’s slight form torpedoed in, bouncing Jori away from the council room windows, while Sten did the same from the opposite direction.

It was enough to avoid the massive glass wall.

Jori scraped his way up the mountain peak. Boulders tumbled, trees snapped, the lair’s communications tower crumbled.

There is absolutely no fucking way I’m going to let him do the fly-by at the funeral.

Sten drew a deep breath, then let it out slowly as he flew forward to assess the damage done to his king.

Sten landed on the fresh mountain scar, Jori nowhere to be seen.

Marli flapped overhead.

After a moment, Jori climbed out of a nest of broken trees. “Marli, that was fucking awesome!” he gave a thumbs-up to the dragoness. “Sten, I’m in a fuck-ton of trouble, and I’ve got tree sap on my balls again.”

Sten sighed, lowering his foreleg so Jori could climb up.

That’s what happens when an extreme adventurer becomes King of the Mountain.

Chapter 15

Marli snickered as Kymri’s rant continued.

“Are you laughing, Marli?” Kymri spun, face flushed, red hair a mess, finger extended.

Marli erupted with a full out snort-laugh. “You are going to be a formidable mother, Kymri.”

“This isn’t funny!” Kymri’s arms dropped to her sides.

“Yes, yes, it is Kym.”

On seeing her friend’s exasperation, Marli did her best to curb her mirth.

“But you should have seen him. He executed that barrel roll perfectly! It was just the—”

“The landing. I know.” Kymri crossed her arms, glaring at Marli. “What’s the damage this time?”

“Mostly just trees and rock face.”

“Mostly?” Kymri arched a brow.

“Sten said something about a communications tower beyond repair.”

Kymri threw up her hands, turning away.

Jori appeared in the doorway, looking sheepish.

Marli took that as her sign of a rescue departure. “It’s all good, Kym. They’ll replace it and we’ll get on with the important stuff.” She skipped out before Kymri could gear up for another rant.

“I see you still have your skin,” Sten said from outside the door.

“Barely. I haven’t seen her that mad in a very long time. She’s always been the cool-headed one.” Marli shrugged as she continued walking. “I guess pregnancy does that.”

Sten fell in step alongside her. “You’re right though, that was a spectacular barrel roll. Incredible flying. Especially that last bounce to keep him out of the council room.” He nudged her shoulder.
