“He didn’t know I was going to talk about my last name. I wanted you both here when I broached the subject, and let’s be honest, this felt like the right time to do it. When you marry TD, you’ll become a Dexter. I want to be a Dexter too, because that’s my dad’s last name.”

I lose it, crying tears of joy as two sets of arms wrap around me. They don’t say anything, just let me absorb this moment and their words. When I finally feel like I can talk, I pull back a little and wipe away the wetness marring my face. “So, I guess there’s only one question left, huh?”

TD laughs and replaces the ring at the edge of my finger. “Ellie Daniels, will you complete my life and become my wife?”

I nod instantly. With a sniffle, I whisper, “Yes.”

The ring is placed on my finger, and I’m pulled into the strong, secure arms of the man I love. He kisses me soundly, his hands gliding along my jaw, fingers dancing into my hair. “I love you so much, Ellie.”

“I love you too, TD,” I murmur against his lips.

“Best day ever,” Brody says with a smile over by the fireplace. “I know you guys are gonna want to celebrate and all, but if we can refrain from that until we’re back at the house, where my bedroom is on the opposite side of yours, I’d appreciate it.”

TD barks out a laugh and takes my hand. He leads me over to where my son stands and pulls him into a hug. “Just so you know, you can have whatever last name you want, but if you decide to choose mine, there’s nothing in this world that’d be a bigger honor. You’re my son without the name, but calling you Brody Dexter would be at the top of the list, right along with hearing your mom say yes.”

He grins back at him. “Thanks, Dad.”

I instantly start sobbing once more. I’ve never heard my son say that word in that context before, and hearing it now is almost too much for my overflowing heart to bear. Nothing can top this moment, this life we’re creating.

TD squeezes my hand and leads me over to the couch once more. I can’t help but steal a glance or two down at my ring, a ring I never thought I’d ever wear. My life has always revolved around raising my son, and now I realize how much better it is with TD by my side. We’re a team, the two of us, and we have our whole lives ahead of us.

Brody plops down on the other side and pulls out his phone, already making a list. “Come on, Mom. We have a wedding to plan.”

THE END
