But this is different.

Hallie and Shay are night and day different.

I move to my desk and pick up the picture of our baby. A smile moves my lips as I scan the image of our tiny bean. Taking my seat, I can’t help but wonder if this little one is a boy or a girl. My gut tells me boy, but honestly, it doesn’t matter either way. He or she is going to be loved so fiercely by both Hallie and me, and that’s all that matters.

Knowing what I need to do, I pull my phone from my pocket and type her a message.

Me: Houston, we have a problem. Shay found the ultrasound.

She’s wrapping up the end of her workday, so it takes a few minutes before she replies.

Hallie: Seriously?! How the hell did she find it?

Me: I had it in my drawer at work and she went snooping.

Hallie: Can’t you fire her for that? What a nosy bitch!

Me: I could try, but she does hold half the company in her greedy little paws.

Hallie: She’s such a nasty cow. Now what do we do?

Me: Well, chances are, she’s going to run her mouth. I know we decided to tell our parents this weekend, but we may want to move that up.

Hallie: I agree. Man, I really dislike that woman.

Me: I know.

Hallie: You married her…

Me: I’ll see if my mom is going to be home tonight. We can stop by before or after your parents if you want.

Hallie: Ok. Give me a few minutes to call my parents.

Instead of putting my phone away, I pull up my mom’s name and give her a call.

“Well, hello there, Son. To what do I owe this mid-afternoon phone call?” she greets pleasantly.

“Just thinking about my favorite lady,” I tell her, returning the smile I hear in her voice.

“Stop bullshitting me. I’m too old for that,” she quips with a chuckle.

“You’re far from old.”

“Yeah, well, tell my knees that.”

“You should call Gabe and see him if they’re bothering you,” I suggest.

“I will, honey. So? I’m sure you didn’t call in the middle of the workday to discuss my knees. What’s up?”

“I was wanting to stop by tonight for a visit. Will you be home?”

“Actually, yes. Gram is coming for dinner tonight. Would you like to join us?”

My mind flashes to Hallie. “Uhh, let me get back to you on that part.”

“Okay. There’ll be plenty of food for you if you want to join us.”

“Sounds good. I’ll let you know for certain shortly.”
