“Look, it’s a long story, and one we don’t really need to get into it right now.”

“Yes, of course. Your father and I stepped outside at the bowling alley to call you. When that nosy Jeanie and her stick-in-the-mud husband, Truman, came in, they started telling everyone about your pregnancy. The wretched woman even smirked at me, as if she knew she was speaking out of turn and announcing something before I even knew.”

“Sounds about right. The apple doesn’t fall too far from the tree,” I grumble.

“Well, now that I’ve had a few minutes to absorb this shocking news, I’m elated. Two grandbabies. Of course, I thought my children would both be married before making us grandparents, but I suppose that’s just how today’s society is. It’s so common to have three kids with three baby daddies these days.”

I groan. “Stop, Mom.”

“What? I’m just saying, we can be young and hip like the rest of you. Anyway, we need to get back inside. Our game is about to start.”

“Okay, good luck tonight. I’ll stop by tomorrow still so you can see the ultrasound.”

I hear my dad speaking, but don’t quite hear what he’s saying. “Dad says to bring Logan with you. He’d like to have a word with him.”

I swallow hard. “Will do. Oh, Mom? Why would you think the baby’s Curtis’s? We’ve been broken up for two years.”

“Well, he called me not that long ago to see how we were doing. He mentioned you two were talking and probably getting back together.”

“What? That’s not true,” I insist, anger coursing through my veins at my ex going behind my back and calling my mom like that.

“Well, to be honest, we’re both glad. Curtis never put you first the way you deserved. He will always be married to his job,” Mom says.

“I know.”

“All right, well, you have a good evening, honey. See you tomorrow,” she says before we both sign off.

“So, your parents know,” Logan confirms once more unnecessarily.

“Yep. You can thank your ex-wife for calling her equally nosy mom and telling the entire town before we could.”

It’s in that moment, my phone starts to blow up.

Blair: Everyone knows. Your brother just got a text message from his friend, Hunter.

I moan and shake my head. “Shit.”

Ellie: The rumors are running wild. Please tell me I didn’t have to find out one of my best friends is pregnant from Shay freaking Johnson.

Ava: Whoa! Why am I hearing you’re pregnant while I’m buying apples at the grocery store?!

Then, as if on cue, Logan’s phone starts to chime with incoming text messages. He glances at his phone. “Your brother would like to have a word with me. Now.”

“This is a mess,” I whisper, firing off messages back to my friends. I tell them all the same thing, that I had every intention of telling them all this weekend and I’m sorry they had to hear about this from someone like Shay. They all seem excited for us, even if there’s the lingering question about the status of my and Logan’s relationship.

“I put your brother off until tomorrow,” Logan tells me when he sets his phone down on the console and backs his truck out of his mom’s driveway.

“You have nothing to be afraid of where he’s concerned,” I find myself saying. My brother is a big teddy bear. He’s firm when he needs to be, but one of the most caring, empathetic individuals I’ve ever known. It’s what makes him a remarkable physician.

“I’m not worried about that. He has a right to be a bit flustered, but not angry. What happens between you and me is just that. Between us. We’re both adults.”

“I know, but he’s still my big brother. He’s protective.”

“And I respect that about him, but I won’t let him disrespect you.”

“Or you,” I say, sliding my own phone back into my purse, ignoring more text messages for now.

Logan shrugs. “I’m not worried about me. I can handle Gabe’s wrath, but I don’t think it’ll come to that. Once I tell him I’m committed to being by your side throughout the pregnancy and our baby’s life, he’ll back down. He’s just irritated I slept with his sister,” he says with a smirk.
