“Are you ok?” Kai asks gently.

I nod and lift my hand to my cheek to wipe away the tear, sniffling again and trying to compose myself. “Yes, yes. I’m fine.” I let out a nervous laugh. “Sorry, I just…I’ve never quite felt like this before.”

Kai smiles and wipes another tear away. He leans down to kiss each cheek softly. “You don’t have to apologize for feeling. I think your feelings are beautiful.”

I shrug and blink the moisture from my eyes as Kai rolls to his side and pulls me into his chest. He wraps his arms around my shoulders and kisses my forehead. “Tell me how you feel,” he whispers against my hair.

I take a deep, shaking breath, inhaling the scent of him; an intoxicating mix of cologne and the sweat that lingers on his skin. “I feel…like I mean something…” I pause. “I feel safe.”

He trails his fingers up my back and across my shoulder. “You should have been given a chance to feel that way a long time ago. But now I’m here to make sure you always will.”

His words send a warmth through me, and I feel at home in his arms. I lift my chin to look at him. “What do you feel?”

His green eyes blink at mine for a moment as he considers his response. He doesn’t speak for a few long seconds, and I wonder if I’ve asked too much, but when he finally opens his mouth, he smiles. “I feel like I’m falling for you. And that’s scary, and my gut tells me to run and hide, close myself off again…” He takes a deep breath. “But I won’t. Not with you. You mean too much to me.”

It's as if my heart is breaking open, finally giving him a place there inside. “Thank you for trusting me.”

He watches me for a long moment, and I think I see the corners of his eyes redden, but he tucks me into his chest again and trails his fingers gently through my hair. His heartbeat is slow and even against my cheek, and it comforts me, knowing he’s at ease. I’m peaceful too. Nothing has ever felt quite as right as laying in Kai’s arms knowing he wants me in the same way I want him.

After a while, he rests his chin on the top of my head and lets out a small chuckle. “I think our ice cream has melted.”

I smirk into his chest and kiss his warm skin. “And I don’t even care.”

He pulls me closer. “Good, because I’m never letting you go.”

I lift my eyes to his. “Do you promise?”

The corners of his mouth turn up as his gaze bores affectionately into mine. “I promise.”
