It is a perfectly platonic few moments, and I can’t remember being so content in months. Maybe we really can just be friends. Maybe I can be satisfied with that. I like her for more than just what I see on the outside. Surely, that means something for our friendship.

For the entire duration of our walk, I’m never cold. I never shiver. Even though the night air is frozen and crystalized around us, Sophie’s warmth is all I really feel.

“So, are you in love yet?” Leah smirks from the doorway, fluffing a strand of Christmas garland she plans to hang above her window.

I roll my eyes.

“No? Not yet?” She laughs. “Give it time.”

“Absolutely not,” I reply. “Besides, he revealed more about himself. Did I tell you?”

“Tell me what?” Leah asks, coming to sit down on my bed.

I fold a load of laundry neatly on the floor. “He apparently doesn’t ‘do relationships.’” I use air quotes.

“Ah, he’s one of those,” Leah chuckles. “I bet he would have been so fun that night, Soph.”

I glare at her.

She grins. “Oh, come on, you weren’t expecting anything more, were you?”

I frown. “No, but that’s why I didn’t go through with it.”

Leah shakes her head as she sets the garland down. “We need to find you a nice, reliable, straight-laced guy, don’t we?”

“No, please, not another one.” I sigh, thinking about my failed relationship with Chris. I yawned my way through that one.

“Well, I can tell you this.” Leah raises her eyebrows. “The kind of guy Kai is—all smooth and enticing but admitting upfront he doesn’t want to commit—that’s not gonna change. So, don’t sit around and wait for him.”

“I’m not,” I reply firmly. “Why would you think that? I’ve been telling you all along that I’m not interested.”

“Because it’s been four months since that night with him and you haven’t been on another date.”

I furrow my brow. “I’ve been a little busy.”

“What about that Nick guy? Seems like he’s always finding a way to see you.”

I shrug. “He’s alright. He’s kinda cute.”

“Not too straight-laced for you?”

“He’s funny. He’s traveled a lot. Seems very worldly.” I fold a shirt neatly. “We danced tonight at the party.”

“So, maybe give him a chance?” Leah suggests, laying back on my bed and crossing her hands behind her head. “Is he looking for a relationship?”

I remember what he said about his great-grandparents. “Yeah, I think so.” He was dressed so handsomely earlier tonight, and he spun me around in front of the Christmas trees, laughing and watching me with his bright blue eyes.

“He’s tall and blonde, isn’t he? That’s sexy.” She licks her lips. “I bet he’d give you exactly what you’re looking for.”

I roll my eyes again. He’s fun, and he knows how to have a good time—maybe too good a time—but his moods are all over the place. One minute he’s locked in a conversation with me, and the next he’s forgetting I’m even there. When we first met, he was all professionalism and class, but his intentions seem to be shifting, like he’s interested in something more than a friendship, and I’m not quite sure how to react. I like him enough, but I’m still not sure.

I purse my lips. “I’m still trying to feel him out.”

“I’m sure he’d let you feel him out anytime,” Leah replies.
