A few hours later, a pinging sound wakes me from a dreamless sleep. Groggy and disoriented, I lift my head from the pillows and peer around the bedroom. The sun is still streaming in through the window, so I don’t think I’ve been out for long.
I pick up my phone and see a text from Prisha. The time reads 12:14 p.m.
PRISHA
Hey, how are you today? Are you here at school?
I type a quick reply.
ME
The headmaster called me and my dad in for a meeting about you-know-what. I’m suspended for the day, but so is Johanna.
I sweep my hair out of my eyes, but my fingers catch on the tangles from the pillows.
PRISHA
Speaking of Johanna, you won’t believe what happened yesterday after you left. Alek dragged Johanna by the hair and cut it off in front of everyone! *mind blown*
I have to reread her text a couple times before the truth sinks in. Alek is the reason behind Johanna’s weird haircut? He did that for me?
The fact that Alek is willing to commit violence for me should scare me, but it doesn’t.
I relish in it.
And that is what scares me.
PRISHA
BTW, I have your bookbag. Want me to drop it off after school?
ME
It’s ok. I’ll grab it from you tomorrow.
Be honest… how bad is it? Is everyone still talking about it?
PRISHA
Not really, but only because they’re afraid Prince Alek will cut their hair off, too.
Did something happen between you two? Alek ran after you yesterday, and from what I hear, he didn’t come back to school.
ME
I’ll fill you in tomorrow. LOTS to talk about. ;)
PRISHA
WHAT?!? Don’t leave me hanging!!!
I grin and set my phone face down on the dresser. But as soon as the brief distraction is over, I remember my life is in shambles, and I’m not sure how I got here.
Everything is snowballing out of control, and I’m powerless to stop it. I don’t know what I can do or how I can change to get off this derailed train that is my life.
Burying my face in my pillow, I sink back into my all-too-familiar depression.
“Willow! You have a visitor!”
