I am trying to be patient, but she’s not even giving me the chance to show her this is real. That the plans we made as teenagers can finally happen. It may not have gone the way we originally planned, but life is full of surprises and this is one of them.

Before I rush over there and convince her to read them, I need to fill my stomach up with something good. Pizza sounds like the perfect option for the afternoon. I pull open the drawer next to the small fridge and reach for the flyers for take-out places nearby, each looking more inviting than the rest, before finally settling on a place and giving them a call.

While I wait for the food to be delivered, I head into the small bathroom and strip out of my clothes. I’m sure Savanna has a lot on her mind so I’ll leave her be for now, then head over there after I’ve eaten.

I’m not giving up. For God’s sake, I made a trip to Chicago just so I can win her back. If that doesn’t show her enough that I’m trying, I don’t know what will.

Maybe she doesn’t feel anything for me any more, but I really don’t believe this is the case.

I shake my head and close my eyes, letting the water fall over my face for a brief moment before spinning around and giving it my back. When I pop my eyes open, there’s an image of Savanna standing naked in front of me with a smirk on her face. I’d give anything to see her on her knees for me, begging to take my hard dick in her mouth.

Just as I think about it, the image of her vanishes and is replaced with one on her knees. Her hair is falling over her shoulder, forcing me to lift my hand and wrap it around my wrist so it’s not getting in the way. She smirks at me before sinking over my length, her mouth doing dangerous things to every nerve-ending in my body.

Although it’s my hand doing all the work right now and not really her, that doesn’t make this fantasy feel any less perfect. There’s no one in the world that could make me feel the way this woman does and that’s only further proof of how deeply I love her.

I grunt out my release, wishing I could be spilling it into her mouth, but instead watch as it slowly disappears down the drain with the water. The air is cool against my skin when I step out of the shower and at the sound of a knock, I quickly make my way to the door with a towel wrapped around my waist.

“Sorry,” I say to the guy when I swing the door open, his gaze immediately narrowing at me. “Didn’t time the shower right.”He doesn’t seem to be phased by my lack of clothes once he sees the tip I slap into his palm. Then he quickly heads down the hall toward the elevators without saying a word.

As soon as I open the pizza box, I let out a low groan and pick up a slice, the melty cheese making my mouth water. There’s nothing like a perfectly cooked pizza. I knew this was the first thing I would eat when I got here since Chicago is known for its pizza, and I’m happy to say it doesn’t disappoint.

My eyes roll into the back of my head at the first bite. I’d be willing to move here for the pizza alone if it meant getting to eat this every day, with or without Savanna. That’s not an option though. I finish off half, then put the rest onto a small plate and set it in the fridge for later.

As much as I’d love to stay here and chill out, I need to get Savanna to believe me. I grab the box from the stand sitting by the door, crumbling her note and throwing it into the trash as I walk out. When I get onto the sidewalk, there’s a large crowd rushing around as they go about their day and it strikes me how different that is from Maple Creek. I’m lucky if I run into five people at once in our small town.

Getting used to that would be a challenge, but I could do it if that’s what Savanna needed me to do.

I’m surprised when my phone rings and Landon’s name pops. I wave to the Uber driver as he stops in front of me and answer the call as I get in the back. “Landon, hey, what’s up?”

“Just checking in with you. We haven’t talked in a little while and I’ve heard some things from friends back home.”

Shit. I forgot he still talked to people from Maple Creek. “Uh, okay. What’s up?”

He scoffs. “I heard Savanna Gentry was back in town for some time.”

It took a little while, but over the years Landon managed to get me to tell him everything that happened with Savanna and me – including the reason I ended things with her. I sigh into the line as the car comes to a stop outside Savanna’s place. “Yeah, she was.”

“That’s all you’re going to give me, bro?” He clears his throat. “Look, I know what you gave up for me, so don’t miss out on your second chance with her.”

“It’s not as easy as you think, Landon. I tried getting a second chance, but she’s keeping her distance from me.”

“Then make her see that you still love her. Is she staying in town?”

“Uh, no, she went back to work in Chicago.”

A car horn blares behind me, followed by police sirens, and Landon chuckles on the line. “Where are you? That doesn’tsound like anything we’d hear back home. You went to get her, didn’t you?”

“No comment.” I refuse to jinx the time I have left here.

“You so did,” Landon mutters with a smile in his voice. “Are you at her place now?”

I groan. “Don’t you have school to worry about rather than my love life?”

“Already got it done, so I’ve got all the time in the world to talk.” He clears his throat and says, “Unless, there’s some reason you can’t talk right now.”

“Fine,” I mutter with a roll of my eyes. Even though he can’t see me, I’m sure he knows I’m doing it. “I’m outside her place now. Happy?”

“Very. Guess I should let you go then. It’s time for you to get the life you’ve always wanted, Dawson. I’m fine down here, so get your girl and make that life with her.” He sniffles and it cracks my heart, hating that he feels any amount of guilt for the things I gave up. “I don’t thank you enough for everything you did to protect me, bro. So, thank you and I’m sorry things got ruined because of me.”
