Korry was standing near the stage, not far away, but enough to give us privacy.

“It’s just that when I saw you talking to that guy?—”

“Colm. He’s an actor. Well, a model and an actor.”

“Of course, he is.”

Tate chuckled. “He’s so green. Reminds me of me back in the day. Except, he’s way nicer.”

“And really fucking gorgeous too,” I added, then let out a big sigh. “Watching him talk to you, I realized that you’re going to get approached like that all the time now. You can have any man you want. A different one every night. More than that.”

Tate shook his head, his expression darkening. “No.”

“No?”

“I don’t want that. I screwed around plenty in the past. It was all fast, meaningless fucks. But that’s all it was, a release,” Tate explained. “And during all that time, with all those hookups, there was always one man I couldn’t stop thinking about. One guy I wanted to be with. You.”

“Tate—"

“Listen to me and listen good: I don’t want anyone but you. I don’t love anyone but you.”

“But now?—”

“Then, now, next week, next year, it doesn’t fucking matter. Baby, it’s always been you.”

His words made my pulse quicken and my breath catch. And the way he gazed at me was so telling.

“I got so damn jealous,” I admitted. “And then when I sat down here, I saw that champagne bottle and for a moment… for a moment, I wanted to drown out the doubt in my head.”

“But you didn’t.”

I shook my head. “There’s no guarantees.”

“All we can do is try our best.”

Tate pulled my hands up to his chest.

“Do you feel that?” he asked.

I swallowed hard as the rapid beat of his heart vibrated against my palm, pounding fast and furious, mirroring mine.

I nodded.

“You do that to me. No one else. And I’m going to tell you every goddamn day if I have to, until you believe me.”

“I do,” I sighed. “And I’m sorry for ruining our night.”

“You didn’t ruin anything. Fuck’s sake, Reed, we’re brand new at this. It’s only natural that we feel protective of each other. And you wanting me all to yourself is fucking hot.”

He leaned forward and took my lips in a heated kiss.

Not a polite one fit for the public, but a deliciously dirty one, tongue and all.

Screw this event, I wanted to head back home.

“Just promise me, if you’re upset, you tell me,” he whispered against my lips. “We talk about it. No silent treatment.”

“That’s my line.”
