We step out of the car and walk up the porch steps together. My heart races as Lucas unlocks the front door, revealing the cozy and welcoming interior I fell in love with on my brief visit earlier. The house emanates warmth and tranquility that instantly puts me at ease.

“I hope you’ll be comfortable here,” Lucas says, his eyes filled with genuine concern.

I nod, trying to hide the fluttering butterflies in my stomach. I swallow hard before I turn to him. “Thank you, Lucas. I appreciate everything you’re doing for me.”

He smiles at me, a smile that reaches his eyes and makes my heart skip a beat. “It’s my pleasure, Amalie. Later, we’ll get your stuff from the motel and pick up my car.”

“That’s fine. If you tell me which room you want me to use as a bedroom, I’ll rest for a little while,” I reply, looking away.

He's left the ball in my court about whether this will be a real marriage. Part of me wants to throw myself at him, beg him to kiss me again, strip me naked, and make me his, but I need time to process.

“Sure, let me show you.”

I follow Lucas across the hall and up the stairs.

“There’s a furnished room. The others are empty, but if you’d prefer one of them, we can move the furniture later.”

Lucas opens the door, and I step in. Windows on two sides allow light to spill into the room. A canopied double bed sits on the right, with a dresser and a wall mirror to the left, and a door I assume leads to an adjoining bathroom. The views of the land around the house are amazing, and I immediately love the room. “It's beautiful. Thank you so much, Lucas. You’ve saved me from a horrible fate.”

Lucas nods as he heads for the door. “I'll leave you to get your bearings. The living room has a TV if you want to watch it.”

“Thanks,” I reply automatically, but right now, all I want to do is sit in front of the windows and look outside. I need to catch my breath and absorb the events of the morning.

“I have some phone calls to make, so I’ll see you later,” Lucas says and leaves me.

I stand in the center of the room, taking in the view and the serenity enveloping me. I can't believe how fortunate I am to have found Lucas in my hour of need. It's as if fate has intervened to rescue me from the clutches of my father’s cruel intentions.

As I gaze out the window, my mind wanders back to my childhood. I have always dreamed of a life filled with love and happiness, but what I have experienced is far from it. My father’s firm grip on my life has been suffocating, trapping me in a world where my choices are dictated by his insidious plans.

No matter what happens, I’m married now. I’m safe from a forced marriage. I may not be safe from the revenge my father will seek, but I know, deep down, that Lucas will do whatever it takes to keep me safe. That's far more than my father has ever done for me.

I smile as I move toward the other window. I see cows in the distance, munching on green grass that blows in the breeze. Are they his cows or a neighbor’s? I like the idea of him having cattle. It means he likes to work with his hands and knows how to take care of lives that depend on him.

“I think I’m going to love it here,” I whisper to the animals, though they can’t hear me.

The sun bathes everything in a soft golden glow, casting long shadows across the fields. It's peaceful here, and I allow myself to relax for the first time in a long while. I settle on the bed, resting my head on the pillows. Thoughts of my past life begin to fade into oblivion, replaced by a new sense of hope and anticipation for the future. No longer bound by the chains of duty and obligation, excitement flickers through me at the possibilities.

I was at my lowest point, desperate for an escape from my father’s cruel plans. Then Lucas appeared out of nowhere, offering me a way out, a chance at freedom and safety. And now we're married. It's surreal, but I can't deny the heat and hunger in his eyes. But they also ignite hope in my heart. I want to explore all the possibilities with him. I want to give him all my firsts.

Lucas wants this to be more than a paper marriage. I see it every time he looks at me, every time he touches me.

And God help me, I do too.

Chapter Eight

Lucas

I step out of the shower and wipe the mirror over the bathroom sink with a towel. My eyes move along my jaw in the reflection, and I turn on the hot water. I need to trim my beard.

As I let the water fill the sink, I lean my palms against the counter and inspect my face. I don’t look any different, but everything about my life has changed. I have a wife. A fucking gorgeous creature I want to cherish. And yeah, not gonna lie; I also want to bury my cock so deep inside her that I brand her mine from the inside out.

And she wants that too. I see it in the way her pupils dilate when I'm near. I feel it in the tremble of her body when I touch her. And damn, that kiss. It was everything. I couldn't get enough of her plump lips, sweet taste, and soft curves pressed against me.

One thing was clear from that kiss, though. She's not experienced. It was almost as if it were her first kiss.

Is she a virgin? Untouched? The innocence in her blue eyes and the restrictive life she's fleeing from tell me she is. And fuck, if that thought doesn't make my cock hard and my heart thunder with anticipation. To know that I'll be her first.

But I'm giving her time to process. Not too much because she needs to accept that she's mine now in every way. And in return, I'll give her every part of myself.
