“I really do appreciate it.” I handed him Alex’s Navy shirt.

He looked at it, chuckled, and pulled it on. “My brother, Danny, is in the Marines. He would be highly offended by this.”

“Well, I won’t tell him if you won’t.”

“Deal. I tell you what, how about you let me buy you that coffee sometime soon, and I can return the shirt?”

“Or you could just give it to me the next time you see me out at the ranch.”

“But what would be the fun in that? I like my idea much better.”

I shook my head and laughed. “You aren’t going to let it drop, are you?”

He shrugged his shoulders and made a what are you going to do gesture with his hands. I still thought going out with Nash was a bad idea, no matter how hot he was, but a cup of coffee sounded innocent enough.

“I’m going to the city later today, and I’ll be gone for a few days, but check with me when I get back.”

“Alright,” he said, as a satisfied grin spread over his face. “You got a deal.”

Chapter 5

Spencer

“Red or white?” Julius held up a bottle in each hand for me to choose from.

“Is the red sweet?” I wasn’t much of a wine drinker or actually much of a drinker at all, but when I did have wine, I preferred red if it was sweet.

“Of course it is, sugar. They both are. I knew you were coming.”

I’d met Julius, or Julie, at the youth center back home years ago when I was barely in my teens, and he’d very quickly decided I was, in his words, too sweet to live, and that I needed someone like him in my life to watch out for me. We’d been friends ever since.

He poured us both a glass of wine, and then we sat down on his couch. “How are things out in the country? Tell me all about it. Have you snagged yourself a cowboy yet?”

“No, no cowboys.” And no, Nash removing his hat the other day and carefully sitting it on the counter before going to work on my plumbing did not flash through my head. Nope, not at all.

“Well then, what’s the point of living all the way out there in the boonies if you aren’t finding yourself a country boy?”

“I don’t know, a job, cheap rent, nice people.”

He flopped back dramatically on the couch and crossed his legs. “Pshaw. You could find a job here, and we could split the rent so it would be cheap, plus the men, sugar, so many men.”

I looked around like I was searching for something in an attempt to equal his drama. “Men…where are they? I don’t see any here. If there are so many of them, why haven’t you found one yet?”

“Oh, trust me, I’ve found plenty of them, but I’m picky, babydoll. I know what I’m worth, and it’s gonna take a special man to make his way from Mr. Right Now to Mr. Right.”

“I don’t think Mr. Right exists, at least not for me.”

Julius went from outrageous to serious in the blink of an eye. He and I had had this conversation before, so he knew how frustrating I found dating. “Don’t be silly. You aren’t the only gay guy in the world who doesn’t like ass-play. Some of the dating apps are even starting to add it as a designator.”

“I know, Julie, but none of the guys I’ve tried meeting up with are my type.”

“Yeah, you do like them kind of Dommy, don’t you?”

I rolled my eyes. “Not Dommy, just big and strong and confident. Maybe even a little controlling, but not in a bad way, you know, more in a take charge kind of way.”

“Right, Dommy, like I said.”

“Whatever, it doesn’t matter because guys like that aren’t interested in a guy like me, and you know that after the disaster with my college boyfriend, Freddy, I decided I’m not going to force myself to do things I don’t enjoy to make someone else happy.”
