“And you shouldn’t, but Freddy was a jerk, so you can’t assume everyone else you meet is like him.”

“I know that, but you also know it isn’t just Freddy. He wasn’t the first guy to tell me he was okay with my preferences and then make me feel like I wasn’t enough.”

“That doesn’t mean you won’t find one who means it. Unless you quit looking, then you never will.”

“I’m not saying I’m quitting, just taking a break. Don’t worry about me.”

“You know I’m going to. Worrying is what I do. But for this weekend, let’s just go out and have fun. We can dance like everybody’s watching. ‘Cause you know they will be.” He motioned down his body. “I mean, how can they help it?”

I downed what was left in my glass. “Okay, sounds good. I’ll go get changed, and then we can go dancing.”

I’d known we would be going out, so I’d brought my outfit to wear tonight. I pulled on my tight black shorts and turned to check them from the back, grinning at the result. There were two things about me that stood out. I had beautiful blue eyes thanks to my mother and a great ass thanks to more squats than I even wanted to think about. Just because I wasn’t looking to hook-up tonight didn’t mean I didn’t want to look my best. One of the main things my Uncle Nathan had taught me was that you dress for yourself and not anyone else.

I pulled on the black mesh top that I liked to wear with these shorts and then went to the bathroom to finish the look with just enough eyeliner to make my eyes pop. I left my hair curly and fussed with it a bit to give it that I didn’t give a fuck how I looked look. A feather earring and leather bracelet completed the outfit, and I was ready to go.

When I walked out of the bedroom, Julius was waiting in the living room, and he let out a long whistle. “Babydoll, you are smoking.”

I chuckled and shook my head. “This is the same thing I wore last time we went out.”

“I know, sugar, and you looked hot that night, too. I called us a ride share, so let’s go.”

It was a short ride to the club. Vesper wasn’t a huge city like San Antonio or Austin, and Kirby’s was the town’s only queer club, so it was pretty much always packed, but tonight it looked like it was even busier than normal. We were waiting to show our IDs so we could go in when I noticed the flyer that was on the front door. That explained why it was busier than normal. It was freaking Daddy night because, of course, it was. Julie and I had said up front we weren’t there to hook-up, and that was a good thing because this place was going to be full of straight-up temptation tonight.

As soon as the bouncer waved us in, I turned to glare at Julius. “Daddy night? Really?”

“Really. Just ‘cause we aren’t on the hunt doesn’t mean we can’t look, and Daddy night always has the very best eye candy. Come on, let’s go get a drink, and then we can hit the dance floor.”

It had been way too long since I’d driven over for Daddy night, so when my brother Keith had messaged me and asked if I was coming this month, I told him I was. Besides, I hadn’t seen my brother since Christmas, and it would be good to catch up. He was the oldest of my siblings, and I was the baby of the family, but we were still really close.

You would’ve thought it would be the opposite since we could both be pretty bossy and a bit on the stubborn side, but because we agreed more often than not, we rarely fought. Instead, it made us a force to be reckoned with, something my sister, Becca, absolutely hated. My amazing mother, on the other hand, found dealing with us frustrating but equally amusing.

There had been chores for me to finish up before I left the ranch, so I met Keith at the club instead of going to his house first. I was running late, but he’d sent me a text letting me know he’d be waiting at the bar for me. I felt bad for a minute because he’d had to wait on me, but that feeling shifted to amusement when I spotted him at the bar. He might have been waiting for me, but it wasn’t a hardship. He was sitting on a barstool facing backwards and holding court with a small group of boys.

I should have known that’s the way it would go since this was pretty much his norm. My brother was an attractive guy, no doubt, but that wasn’t the main reason guys flocked to him. All he had to do was mention that he was a firefighter, and the next thing you knew, a group would form around him. Sometimes guys, sometimes girls, but always submissive types looking for a big strong Daddy to put out their fire. It was almost comical how predictable it was.

I was sure he was entertaining them with some story about how he saved the city from burning to the ground, but before I was close enough to hear what tale he was sharing this time, he spotted me approaching and grinned.

“Well, if it isn’t my baby brother come to join the party!” he called out.

Everyone in his little crowd of admirers turned in my direction. The youngest looking of the boys looked me up and down and then gave me a slow, sexy grin. “Oh, ride ‘em cowboy. I didn’t know there were two of you. Do you have any idea how much fun we could get up to?”

Keith rolled his eyes with a playful grin. “Sorry, sugar, my brother and I don’t play that way.”

The young man pooched his lip out in an epic pout. “But Daddy…”

“Nope. Now, you boys go have fun. Maybe I’ll see y’all later. I want to spend some time with my brother.”

“Fine, then,” the boy said, turning to his friends. “Let’s hit the dance floor.” The boys all flashed my brother a smile and then went on their way.

“How do you manage that? I swear it’s every time.”

He shrugged. “I mean, sure, finding a hook-up is easy, but finding someone I’d actually want to spend time with? Not so much. They aren’t interested in me. They’re interested in telling their friends they bagged a firefighter. You can’t tell me it isn’t the same for you in your cowboy hat and boots.”

I chuckled. “Trust me. Not the same. You know guys in cowboy hats are a dime a dozen around these parts.”

“True enough, but you don’t just wear the hat. You’re the real deal, and they can tell. How many times have you heard save a horse, ride a cowboy?”
