“Well, I didn’t really figure it would be appropriate if I said damn boy, your man is hot.”

“You thought it, though.”

“Guilty. He kind of reminds me of Lexi, except a little more rugged. Like he just climbed off a horse after wrestling a steer into submission. Your pops is gonna love him. You are bringing him to the party, aren’t you?”

“I don’t know. I’d like to, but that seems like a lot to throw at him at one time, don’t you think?”

“Nah, just throw him in the deep end and see if he can swim.” Nathan cackled, and I could tell he loved the idea.

“That doesn’t sound like a good plan.”

“It actually does if you think about it. Everyone will be busy with the party, so no one will have time to focus on him or what his intentions are.”

“Well, that’s true.” I wasn’t completely sold on the idea, but Nathan did make a good point.

“So, is he everything you were looking for?”

“He’s exactly what I’ve been looking for.” I paused for a second before going all in. “Nathan, he’s a Daddy,” I said barely above a whisper.

“Well, we both knew that was what you wanted way back when. And he’s okay with the whole side thing?”

Nathan had been the one I’d gone to before for advice when I thought something was wrong with me because I didn’t enjoy anal. He’d been the one who held me while I cried because I believed I was broken, and he was the one who showed me article after article about gay men who loved sex but didn’t like penetration.

Sugar pie, there’s nothing wrong with you, do you hear me? You’re perfect and don’t you ever let anyone tell you any different or make you feel less than. And always be true to yourself. Don’t you dare let anyone guilt you into doing something you don’t want to do.

I just wish it hadn’t taken me so long to listen to him because it had been good advice and could have saved me a lot of trouble. Of course, I’d had to learn the hard way that he was right.

“He says he’s okay with it,” I said hesitantly.

“But you don’t believe him? You think he’s just saying what you want to hear?”

“No!” I exclaimed because I didn’t believe that even for a second. “I think he means it. For now, anyway. But it’s a lot to ask, you know, and I’m afraid he’ll regret it after a while.”

“Sugar, you’re selling yourself short. If he’s the right man for you, he won’t ever regret being with you.”

“I hope not.” I sighed and was about to add that I doubted it would last, but I heard a knock on the door, saving myself a lecture on how special I was. “He’s here, Nathan. I gotta go. Tell David and Danni I said hi and I’ll see them at the party. And don’t tell my dads any of this.” I didn’t think he would, but I felt the need to say it anyway. Not that I felt like I had to keep it a secret, I just wasn’t ready to discuss my lifestyle with my parents.

“You know I won’t, kiddo. Have fun tonight.”

For the most part, I loved River Gorge, but on nights like this, I did miss Vesper. If we lived in the city, there would be so many options for places I could have taken Spencer tonight. We could have gone to see a play, which I knew he would have enjoyed, or gone axe throwing, or even to the zoo. But here in River Gorge, our options were seriously limited. We both had to work tomorrow, so staying in town made the most sense, so it looked like The Watering Hole would be our destination.

Of course, when he opened the door, my hunger shifted from wings and beer to something else entirely.

“Damn, baby, you look good.”

“Well, hello to you, too,” he said with a grin.

I reached for him and pulled him against me. “What do you expect? I haven’t seen you for days, and then you open the door looking downright mouth-watering.”

“You’re ridiculous.” He looked up at me with those big blue eyes of his, and for just a second, I was completely lost. “Let me grab my jacket, and we can go.”

“Oh yeah, go. I thought we would go to The Watering Hole and grab something to eat, if that works for you.” I followed him inside his apartment. Ari was stretched out on the couch, so I reached down and gave him a scratch behind the ears while Spencer grabbed his jacket off the back of the chair.

“Sure, they have great wings, and they probably won’t be too busy since it’s the middle of the week.” He started to put his jacket on, but I took it from his hands and held it out for him. He smiled at me over his shoulder and slipped his arms in. “Thanks.”

“Of course.” I leaned down, kissed his temple as I placed my hand on his back, and directed him out the door and down the stairs to my truck. I opened the door for him and watched while he climbed inside.
