“Have a hiring fair,” I tell him. Before people start leaving the room, I rush to the podium. “We’re going to have a hiring fair in two days at the high school gym,” I announce. Everyone looks my way. “I’ve been hired as the coordinator. Bring me your ideas and your resumes, and we’ll get started immediately.”

Several people call out their approval, and I have no doubt the entire town will know about the event by the end of the night. It will be a very long day. I can’t wait. I have a lot to plan, figuring out what exactly we need.

I take Callan’s hand and we leave the town hall. I can’t quit smiling as we make our way home. Today has been great. I have a feeling it’s only going to get better from here on out. I’m always happy, but right now I’m walking on clouds. I want it to last the rest of my life.

Chapter Twenty-Five

Sasha

I’m sitting in the high school gym watching people stream inside. There’s a buzz of excitement as neighbors talk amongst themselves, some with notebooks, some with single pieces of paper, some with entire boxes of items. No one knows exactly what the hires are for right now, but they want to be a part of this project. This really is the most exciting thing this town has probably seen since the community was established. I’m so glad to be a part of it.

“This looks a bit like a cheerleading tryout,” Callan says as he stands next to me.

“You never know in this town. Some might do a little cheer routine for us,” I tell him, and we both laugh.

More and more people stream inside the gym and I look around at the happy crowd. We can’t hire the entire population of Seaville, but we can include everyone in one way or another. Each person has their own unique talent and quirks, and I love each of the them for it.

We get started, and I have to hide a lot of laughter as interviews turn into comedy routines with people saying hilariously absurd things in their eagerness to be a part of this exciting project.

Mr. Spears assures us he can build a cabin with nothing but toothpicks and duct tape, and Ms. Crema says she can plant a garden for a fully sustainable restaurant that her ceramic gnomes will protect. I thank each person and assure them I’ll let them know who we’re hiring in the next few days.

“This is the most entertaining round of interviews I’ve been part of,” Callan whispers to me as we get a one minute break.

“I tried to warn you the first day you stepped into town.”

“The character of this town is what draws me in.”

“You’ve lost the suit and gained a smile, so I’d say this town has worked its magic on you.”

“It certainly has.” He leans closer as if he’s going to kiss me. We might be surrounded by our neighbors, but I don’t care. If I go an hour without kissing him, it’s too long.

“Hello, Sasha, I’m up,” Dale, our local fisherman with a missing finger, says.

“What makes you want a job?” I ask. “You’re a lifelong fisherman.”

“Well, I once built a sandcastle so big it was declared a national monument,” he tells us. “I’d say that qualifies me for head of the construction crew.” He holds up his hand and wiggles his four remaining fingers, and Callan and I both burst out laughing.

“Well, that’s certainly a high recommendation,” I tell him. He beams at us.

“I don’t really want the job, I just couldn’t miss out on the hottest event in town. Maybe when the resort opens I’ll do a storytime hour, or I can do fishing charters,” he adds.

“That’s a wonderful idea.” I want this place to be unique and the flavorful characters in our town can certainly make sure that happens. “We’ll have to talk again when the resort is finished.” He beams at us and several people nearby move closer. They want to share their unique talents as well.

“I have a pet pig that can do somersaults,” Amelia chimes in.

“I have to see that,” Callan says.

“It’s quite delightful to watch,” she assures us.

“Maybe we’ll do a fun animal carnival once a month,” I tell her, and our local waitress beams at us. Many more people start shouting out their talents and ideas. It’s truly entertaining.

“I don’t have any acrobatic animals, but I make the best chili in the entire US,” Mike from the surf shop says.

“I have to agree, I’ve tried it,” I tell him. Sarah from the bookstore beams at Mike and I think their little romance is heating up.

The interviews continue and I’m exhausted but pleased. Among the hilarity we also find some real talent. Callan and I are making a list of candidates to bring into the project. We might not have a huge population, but we certainly have some talented people. No matter what changes lie before us, our town will face them head-on and this project will come to fruition with a lot of hard work and determination.

Amidst the chaos food is brought in, keeping people hanging out longer, adding to the festive atmosphere in the room. People are showing off their wares, hoping to have their food chosen for the resort, and I have to admit, there are a lot of showstoppers. The hardest part of all of this is going to be choosing who’s in. I want them all, but that’s not possible.
