“You’d better,” I mock growled at him, “or else I’ll get…uh, sad, and say another bad word.” I’d been about to say pissed, and caught myself at the last second.

“’Kay!” Leo giggled. “Do you have a mom?”

“Yes, your grandmother. Her name is Melanie and she used to be a lawyer. My father, your grandfather, retired from the US Army a few years ago.”

He sucked in a breath. “Like GI Joe?”

I laughed. “Kind of, yeah.” It wasn’t nearly as exciting as the cartoon soldier, but it seemed easier to say yes to a child’s frame of reference.

“Wow. So cool!”

I laughed and brought two plates of eggs, toast, and bacon to the tiny table. “Pretty cool, yeah. These are scrambled and that is a fried egg.”

He poked the yolk and frowned. “It’s juicy.”

“Just taste it. If you don’t like it, I’ll eat it.” I flashed what I hoped was a friendly smile and folded my body in the smallest chairs mankind had ever created. “Anything else?”

“Juice,” he sang, and bopped his head from side to side.

“Not coffee?”

He laughed loud and with his whole body, and the sound was like a balm to my wounded fucking soul. “Momma says I’m too young for coffee.”

“More for me,” I said as I grabbed a jug of apple juice from the fridge and poured it into a thimble of a plastic cup.

I watched as he stabbed the scrambled eggs, finding them familiar and easy to eat. Leo was more skeptical about the fried egg, but he matched my moves, cutting the yolk with the corner of the toast. It was fucking adorable.

Ellie rushed into the kitchen with sleepy eyes, mussed hair, and a t-shirt that was more see-through than it was anything else. She looked around with wide, frantic eyes that didn’t relax until she spotted Leo at the kitchen table. “Oh. You’re here. You’re okay,” she whispered the last part to herself.

Personally, I didn’t quite manage to take my eyes off her shirt.

Leo turned and waved. “Mornin’, Momma.”

She smiled at Leo, and I gave myself permission to stare at her beautiful form. The t-shirt hugged her hips, hung loose at the waist, and clung to her tits while displaying a hint of pink nipples. My mouth went dry at the sight of her, and my cock decided now was the perfect time to wake up.

“Morning, baby.”

“Hungry?” The question came out on a growl because I needed to say something, anything to distract myself from her mouthwatering nipples.

Ellie shook her head and smiled. “Sorry I overslept.”

“No worries,” I assured her with a smile, before finally dragging my eyes away. “Leo and I are all good, just eating breakfast.”

“Fried eggs, Momma. They’re good!” He flashed a smile up at me, so proud and excited I just wanted to wrap my arms around him.

Ellie frowned. “Fried eggs?”

I nodded. “He said he never had them.” Had I fucked up already?

“Thank you,” she said eventually, her shoulders sagging with relief.

“No thanks necessary. Sit,” I told her. “Eat some breakfast. You were up late last night.”

“I was writing,” she said as she took my seat and dug into my plate of eggs, bacon, and toast. “This is good. Thanks.”

“Sure,” I grunted, because the sight of all that bare leg when she sat was too much, especially with a four-year-old chaperone around. Thankfully, my phone rang, providing the perfect distraction from the woman who was bound to make my life complicated as hell. “Yeah?”

“Whoa, who pissed in your oatmeal?” Rocky asked, laughing at my pissed off tone.
