Rocky stayed behind our meeting room after all the brothers left our inner sanctum, and kicked his feet up on the chair beside him, a knowing smile on his face. “You’re all twisted up, Diesel.”

I glared, but it only made the bastard laugh even harder. “I’m fine.”

Fine was the last damn thing I felt. How could I feel anything else after finding out I had a kid and that his mother was missing? And Ellie was a whole other issue, one I wasn’t at all prepared to examine too closely.

“Fine?” Rocky laughed again and clapped me on the shoulder. “You’re one tough son of a bitch, without a doubt. A solid leader, and you’ve grown the MC to more than any of us could have ever imagined in those early days. But…”

“Ain’t that the truth.” One of our whores, a red-headed little thing wearing nothing, but a skimpy gold bikini muttered huskily, as she wandered into the room and stopped to lean one curved, heavily tattooed hip on the table between us.

I frowned at her. “Fully clothed in the main club, Trixie. How many fucking times do I have to tell you?”

She pouted. “But I am clothed. Girls wear bikinis all the time.”

I sighed and nudged her off the table, noticing Rocky eyeing the way her ass bounced as she stood. “Clothes on or get out. Your choice. And knock before you enter, even if the door is open.”

“Trixie, darlin’, get your ass over here!” I heard Tess’s voice carry above the rest, and the redhead sighed gustily and left.

“Fine, are you?” Rocky said with a smug look. “You didn’t even look at her tits once.”

My brows knitted into a frown. “What’s your point, Rocky?”

“My point is that there is no fucking way you’re fine with all of this. Just learning about Leo would be enough to bring any man to his knees, and to find out your baby mama is missing? And have a thing going with her sister at the same time? Come on, man, be straight with me.”

“I’ve had time to adjust, and Leo is great. The kid is just so fucking pure. He’s perfect.” And he deserved his mother. If she was out there and she wanted to come back to my son, I wanted that too. “You knew Stacy better than I did. Anything to add?”

Rocky blinked. It wasn’t a big deal that we’d both banged the same chick. Neither of us had a claim on her, and it happened more often than it didn’t. His lips curled into a smile before he spoke. “Stacy wasn’t wild, not like a lot of the chicks who show up here, but she liked a good party and a good fuck.”

“That’s what I remember too. Ellie is convinced she wouldn’t leave without a good reason.”

“If that’s what her sister says, believe her until you have a reason not to. Don’t borrow trouble.”

Was that what I was doing, borrowing trouble? “I just want them both to be safe.”

“You’re worried. Why?”

I shared with him Ellie’s family curse theory. “She hasn’t said much about it, but I can tell she’s genuinely concerned. Maybe there’s a history of drug abuse, or—fuck, I don’t know, alcohol addiction or some shit. Something that could invite danger if not watched out for.”

“Then we’ll keep her and Leo safe. It’s what we do, right?”

I nodded. “Yeah, and we’re damn good at it too.”

“Remember that and everything will be fine.” Rocky stood and flashed one last smile before he left to join the brothers drinking and unwinding. I hoped like hell my VP was right.

Because if he wasn’t, they were in danger, and it was up to me to protect them. With my life if I had to.

Chapter Sixteen

Ellie

For nearly a week now, we had hit a semi-consistent daily routine that I could get behind. Wake up, eat breakfast, wash Leo’s sticky breakfast face and get changed to head to the MC clubhouse for a few hours, so that Leo and I could spend more time where Diesel could keep an eye on us. I still thought he was being cautious, Stacy had been gone for almost four years, surely if we were in danger then something would have happened by now.

But then I remembered the letters. Though after almost three weeks with Diesel there had been none, and no gifts left on my porch—one of the prospects would ride over to check things at my house a couple of times a week—so maybe I was just making a fuss over nothing?

Once at the clubhouse, Diesel would head upstairs to his office to deal with paperwork from the various businesses, and I would stay down in the main space with my laptop and Leo.

It turned out to be a decent working space, with its cozy but edgy atmosphere and the fact that barely anyone started coming through until at least one in the afternoon. They had a coffee machine which I took full advantage of, swinging behind the bar without hesitation to top myself up, and Leo had a great time between his coloring books, discovering every exciting new nook and cranny of the large space, and Chopper, who turned out to be an excellent babysitter and very protective, despite his flatulence.

The new book, partially inspired by real life events, was off to a good start. The previous book was with my editor, which meant I had plenty of time to work on this one. The words flowed easily as I sat on the comfiest leather couch, sunlight warming me through the windows, and the sound of Leo making fart noises to try and encourage another stinky round from Chopper.
