He turned with his politician smile and smoothed a hand down the lapel of his designer suit. The man was the definition of smarmy, with his thinning hair slicked back and manicured hands. “I hear you’ve been asking questions about me. Figured I’d come to you, and you can get all the answers you need.”

He thought he was untouchable, that’s why he’d shown up the way he had. That would be his downfall. “I’ve learned everything I need to know,” I assured him, staying cool because this fucker didn’t deserve a display of emotion.

He nodded as he turned in a circle, making sure he was seen taking in the place, judging it, and finding it lacking somehow. “I know your kind doesn’t understand the concept, but this is just how business is done. I see something I want, and I have my people figure out a way to get it.”

I flashed a humorless smile. “Oh, I get that all too well. When I was in the military, we didn’t stop until our mission was complete. No matter how many bodies we had to step over in the process.” And there it was, the fear that flashed in his eyes told me he was a mean son of a bitch, but he was too soft to do his own dirty work. “Would that way include dumping dead girls in places they shouldn’t be.”

I knew I was on thin ice here, pretty much accusing the fucker of the murders. But I was done with playing around, if he was involved—and I was pretty damn sure he was—then I wanted to force his hand. Carter smacked his lips together and shook his head. “Dead underage girls are bad for business.” His shit-eating grin spread slowly. “Most of the time. Sometimes they show up at just the right time.”

I laughed with him. “And sometimes that’s how arrogant assholes find themselves in a bad situation.”

He laughed louder. “Men like me don’t end up in prison. Surely, you’ve learned that by now.”

I took a step forward, relishing the way his eyes widened with fear. “Who said anything about prison? Surely, you’ve learned by now that’s not how everyone operates.”

“Threats?”

“Interpret it how you will.” I took another step forward and he took a step back. You lose, asshole.

Not to be outdone, Robert stood taller and smiled. “How are you finding fatherhood, Diesel? Boys are so wonderful at that age when they think their fathers are superheroes. Such a shame when they find out they are merely mortals.” His eyes studied me carefully, waiting for me to lose my cool.

But I refused. It pissed me off that he would even mention Leo, but that was a mistake on his part. “Let me ask you a question, Carter.”

“Anything.”

“There isn’t a link between you and those dead little girls, is there?”

I expected his denial, and the rich prick didn’t disappoint. “Of course not. What would I need with girls when I can have any woman I want?”

“I had to ask,” I said with a shrug.

“Nice try,” he said, just as a phone rang inside his jacket pocket. A frown marred the smile on his face as he pulled it out, going pale when he looked at the screen.

“Problem, Carter? You look like you’ve seen a ghost.”

He looked up, angry. “Fuck you. This isn’t over, you biker bastard. Remember you have more to lose than I do.”

I smiled and walked forward, forcing him to step back again, or risk coming within my reach. “I wouldn’t be so sure of that. Thanks for stopping by.” He vibrated with fear as I brushed past him and opened the door. “See you soon.”

“Very,” he snarled with false bravado, and rushed out of the clubhouse and into a waiting Tahoe with blacked-out windows.

“Holy fuck, that was intense.” Maverick laughed and shook his head. “Like watching two spies try to out-spy each other.”

“That is one greasy bastard,” Hawk said with a shudder. “Feel like I need a shower.”

An enemy like Robert Carter wasn’t the same as another MC, or any of the gangs who often tried to step to us. He wasn’t just rich, he was also powerful. Influential. He rubbed elbows with politicians, prosecutors, and even law enforcement.

“He fucked up,” Rocky grunted, breaking into the reverie.

“In more than one way,” Slate said as he stepped inside the front door and stopped beside me.

“All done?”

Slate nodded. “Cloned both phones and put two trackers on the Tahoe. One they’ll find easily,” he said, and flashed a proud grin. “Did he say anything useful?”

“One thing,” I said at the same time as Rocky.

“He shouldn’t know about Leo,” Rocky said. “His arrogance got in his way. The question is, how does he know?”
