“I don’t know how to answer that. Our end came after my father died and I was in a bad place.”

“When did you say that your father died?”

“January.”

He quickly put dates in order. That dovetailing bastard. He’d moved onto Brittney before ending things with Callie. But did she know? Omaha wasn’t big, but if one partner was caught up in the grief of death, the distraction was there to make cheating possible. And Trent no doubt had taken advantage of the possibility.

He released his grip on her voluptuous body. Liam’s hands fisted considering what his brother-in-law might have done to this beautiful woman. He didn’t want this to end, but she needed clothing for this conversation. Liam turned his back, buckled his jeans after adjusting a painfully hard erection and reached for the robe, handing it back without looking.

She moved around him to face him again when she was wrapped up like the most adorable present he’d ever imagined.

“Do you think Trent would cheat on Brittney?” he asked.

“Liam, it’s exhausting and futile to think about what Trent Quinlan is capable of. He’s not perfect, that’s for sure, but he assured me on the phone that he’s not cheating on his fiancée.”

“She thinks he is.”

Callie stepped back from him, staring absently away. “Oh…”

“Callie, was Trent a good boyfriend?”

She shoved her hands in the big fluffy pockets. “Liam, he’s a client now. And I’ve probably said too much already. We pride ourselves on discretion, and I’m afraid I’m not showing that right now.”

“Fuck discretion! This is my little sister. This is my law practice. I don’t want our business tied to his family’s before it’s irrevocable. My father still wants the wedding to happen. I need to know. If you care about me at all, please … I need to know.”

“Sometimes the truth is inconsequential if Brittney really loves him and he can be what she needs.”

That didn’t answer his question. Brittney was a grown woman, and he would support her however he could, but he’d never condone or support a wedding knowing the man wasn’t upstanding. His sister meant too much to him to look the other way.

“Trent made mistakes with me, but people can change, Liam,” she said the sentence slowly, like she wasn’t sure she meant it.

“Not in my world. When someone’s guilty, they’re guilty. When they’re innocent, they’re innocent. Trent sounds like a repeat offender to me.”

She moved toward the door. “I’ll update you about the flight home as soon as we know something.”

The door closed behind her before he’d said another word.

He ran down the hallway with her dress hanging from one hand and his t-shirt in the other. “Callie!”

She didn’t turn around. “Please, leave me alone.” Her long legs shuffled along in the robe, her ass swaying side-to-side.

Dammit, woman.

“Callie, please.” Walking with a raging hard-on was about as comfortable as skipping with a rolling pin in his pants.

They neared their rooms. She slowed down and spun to him. “Liam, let’s just not.”

He caught her hand before it swiped the keycard in front of her door reader. “Please, come to my room and talk. I didn’t expect what happened in the movie room, but I know for fucking sure I don’t want us to be done here.”

“Maybe this was a stupid idea.”

“Not stupid. Having sex with you is a great idea.” He tried to make it a little more lighthearted. This couldn’t be the end. “Put yourself in my shoes. I found out that my soon-to-be brother-in-law has been and may still be an asshole. And you slept with him. I’m a little concerned on both fronts.”

“Why does it matter who I’ve slept with?”

Did he have to say it? He leaned against the doorjamb and tipped his head until it rested there as well.

“One, I’m worried that he was an asshole to you, and I don’t want to take advantage of you if you’re not in the same place as me. Two, I’m … I’m…” He rubbed a hand down his face. This was too sobering for the big guy below, and he faded away from his big moment. “I’m a little concerned with performing up to whatever you’re used to.”
