She closed the door behind her without looking back.

This was the way their ending was supposed to happen.

Then why do I feel like I’m missing out on something?

Callie grabbed her phone from on top of the entertainment center in her room.

“Service is still out,” Meg said from her bed.

The guys were gone, and Meg sprawled out with her sunglasses on and another margarita in her hand.

“How many of those have you had today?”

“Callie, you’re not my mother?—”

“No, I’m your boss, and right now I’m not happy.”

“Not my job to make you happy. It’s my job to make you money. And since we can’t fly out of here right now, and I don’t have internet to be checking for other flight opportunities. It’s best that I forget all of that in the bottom of a bottle of tequila. And maybe, just maybe, you’d find a little less stress, if you joined me. Not like you can contact the airport until we get service, then who’s to say that they’ll have service. Mother Nature has decided to make a statement, so I drink.” She lifted the glass in a toast.

“You’re not serious?”

“Callie, when was the last time you really let go?”

She wracked her brain, but the memory bank refused to give up a night that didn’t involve business. “But that means we’ll probably have to stay another night.”

Meg’s puffy lips drew into a big grin. “I’m not complaining.”

Callie fell onto the bottom of Meg’s bed and lifted a hand for a drink.

“You wanna explain the robe and lack of dress?” A drink magically appeared.

She guzzled a good portion of the margarita. “I think we tried to seduce each other in the movie screening room.”

Meg laughed. “Tried?”

“It was all good, but we didn’t have a condom.”

“Rookies.” Meg shook her head.

“I was going to let him … go … you know…” Callie raised her eyebrows in emphasis, and by Meg’s gaping mouth Callie realized the idea wasn’t as sexy as she’d thought.

“Are you fucking serious? You were gonna go unprotected?”

Callie rolled over and pulled the comforter over her head. “I know. I don’t know what I was thinking, but I said, ‘I was tested after?—’”

“Trent,” they said together.

Meg rolled closer to Callie. “Probably kinda ruined the mood, since that’s his bro-in-law to-be, right?”

“And his sister thinks Trent’s cheating on her.” The comforter fabric muffled Callie’s voice.

“The asshole probably is. Trent’s a serial dovetailing, man bologna beating, sticky nut butter donating, crapbag of a human. But why the hell would you go without a condom?”

She pulled down the comforter. “I think … I think I trust him.”

Meg’s mouth dropped open, and she covered it with her hand theatrically. She dropped it with a thud to her lap. “Shit. You really like him? And you’re over Trent!” Meg rolled onto her stomach to be face to face. “Callie, I know how hard it was losing Trent and your dad so close together, but unlike your father, Trent wasn’t a loss at all. He was excess baggage that you were paying a high price to have in your life.” Meg rolled to her back, her head touching Callie’s like they used to do almost fifteen years ago in high school. “He didn’t deserve you, but what about Liam?”

“I’m not sure. His brother was waiting in his room.” Callie giggled. “He might’ve gotten an earful about how Liam wanted to fuck me.”
