“Brittney thinks Trent’s sleeping around on her. She saw him getting into a woman’s BMW in the middle of the day when she went to surprise him for lunch. I’m pretty sure he cheated on Callie. Dovetails relationships like a master though.” Not that he was impressed.

“Those assholes are the worst. It’s like you can’t just have one woman to yourself? You have to have an extra for when your ego takes a hit and you have to prove to yourself you’re still a man?”

“Basically.”

“But you liked him before knowing all this?”

“I thought I did.”

Trent had come off as sincere in every interaction they had. His bachelor party was on the up and up. No strippers, barely any booze, and Trent stayed sober to go to Britt’s house after. Either he was a great faker, or he’d changed. The latter didn’t compute in Liam’s brain.

“Does Brittney know for sure?” Sam asked.

“She was going to confront him last night.”

“But you can’t get a hold of her?”

Liam dropped his head and shook it. “No. Probably another twenty-four hours for cell service.”

“God, I love living off the grid.”

“Yeah, speaking of, you owe Trent $100,000 for having to find your ass in Mexico.”

“He put up that kind of money to find me?”

Liam stilled. “Yeah, but I’m sure that’s a drop in the bucket for this guy. He owns Quinlan, Baker, and Brown.”

“I bet Daddy’s happy about that.” The way he said “daddy” screeched bitter and massive issues that Sam needed to see someone about.

Liam glanced up and blew out a long breath. “And even after hearing Britt’s accusations, Dad still wants her to marry him.”

“You know you’re not making an excellent case for me to go home and watch this shitshow of a family reunion.”

“Thinking of staying down here in Mexico, myself.” Liam joked. Kind of.

“Dude, we’d have a great time.” Sam rambled on about places they could go and people he’d take him to see.

“I’m joking, Sam,” he interrupted.

“Don’t get my hopes up like that, bro.”

Liam stood. “I know you like living down here, but I’m not sure I’m made out for the laidback style you’re sporting.”

His brother had slipped into a sand-colored, linen jacket with a peach-colored t-shirt under, and jeans with boat shoes. He looked both like himself and like someone Liam didn’t know. He’d grown up, and it was time to let him live his life as his own. Whether they liked it or not.

“Sam, Brittney’s going to try to get you to stay in Omaha.”

“Why would I do that?”

“‘Cause she’s pregnant, and she wants you around to see your niece or nephew.”

Sam rubbed a hand down his face. “Seriously, she’s pregnant with a possible adulterer’s baby who slept with the woman you want to sleep with and lied about me being sick with cancer?”

“Welcome to our version of ‘It’s a Dysfunctional Life’.”

“This shit isn’t believable, bro.”

Yeah, I know.
