Liam and Sam waited in the lobby.

“I’m gonna go back to the room. This isn’t gonna happen, Sam.”

“Holy shit.” Sam’s mouth dropped open.

Liam spun and his heart pounded in his chest. He’d never thought someone could make him feel like Callie did. Nervous, but excited. Scared, but intrigued. Ready, yet unprepared. Like a teenager again. Sam was always prepared.

“Sam.” He elbowed his brother. “Sam…” He looked over, and Sam’s gaze was only set on one thing.

Meg.

Liam whispered, “She’s a handful.”

“Gave me a spitfire performance when I went over to invite them to dinner. I’m prepared.”

“Speaking of being prepared, do you have any?—”

“Ladies, good evening.” Sam stepped forward and kissed both on their cheek.

Liam followed his little brother’s smoothness with a kiss on Meg’s eyelid and one on Callie’s ear.

Great start to the evening.

“Good evening, Liam.” Meg blinked her eye and reset her contact with her finger.

“Sorry, Meg.”

“No problem.”

Sam held out his arm to Meg, and she slipped hers through. Her slinky little black dress didn’t compare to Callie’s form-fitting silver number in his mind.

“Are you comfortable?” Liam asked her.

“With the situation or what I’m wearing?”

He paused while holding out his arm. “I guess both.”

“I was planning to drown myself in a bottle of tequila and call it good for a night, but then I realized that Sam’s here and we need to get him back to Omaha tomorrow for a wedding that happens in forty-eight hours. So, no alcohol for me.”

They followed behind Sam and Meg, and the maître d’ motioned them to a table.

“He needs to get fitted for a tux, and I need to talk to…” Liam didn’t want to talk about Trent anymore.

“I’m not wearing a penguin suit,” Sam thundered, and a couple of tables turned their heads. “A dying man’s last wish,” he added, and a woman put her hand to her chest and softened her eyes in compassion.

So much for not playing the part.

Liam’s jaw tightened. “Then that’s the last wish you get, little brother.”

“Liam?” Callie’s eyebrows narrowed.

He pulled out her chair and helped her scoot in.

“You look beautiful tonight.” Liam sat on her left. “Where did you get the clothes?”

Meg smiled. “The resort has a costume department for the plays and musicals they put on. I asked Javier for a little favor, and voilà, access to fancy clothes. We need to return them to the front desk when we leave.”

“I’m hoping we can get out tomorrow morning.” Callie opened her menu. “The sooner, the better.”
