Liam scanned his keycard, but the light didn’t flash green to let them into the room. “What the hell?” He passed it over the reader in a waving motion. “Seriously! Just what we?—”

Callie grabbed his forearm. “I guess you gave me this for a reason.” She pulled his other keycard from her pocket.

He swallowed deep, his Adam’s apple bobbing with the move. “You kept it?”

“Of course.”

She waved the piece of plastic and the light lit up, and so did his face. “Let’s go in and talk.”

He filled two glasses with Sam’s bourbon, and he passed one to Callie as she lounged on the cream and coral colored sofa.

“What do you like about flying, Callie?”

“Control.” She sipped the caramel-color liquid, and the smolder of the alcohol warmed her from the inside out.

“Is that all?”

“Kind of. I mean I love going to new destinations. Usually ones without hurricanes, but hey, this will make for a good story, right?”

“Probably.”

“How about you? What’s your favorite part of being a lawyer?”

He stared into his glass, then set it on the coffee table without taking a drink. “I don’t think I have one.”

“Oh.” She couldn’t imagine not doing what she loved, but she wasn’t blind to know that people did it all the time. “There’s got to be at least something you like about the job?”

He ran his fingers through that blond hair that Callie knew was as soft as silk. “I like working with my sister, Brittney.”

“That’s good. Family is a blessing.”

Liam shook his head. “Not always.”

A cloud hung over him, like a human Eeyore.

She adjusted on the sofa. “Like how?”

His silence didn’t make her uncomfortable. She’d wait forever to hear what was bothering him.

She moved closer to him. “Is it Trent? Is he cheating?”

“I don’t know. He can distract better than anyone I know.”

“That’s the truth. Trent isn’t a bad guy, Liam. Your sister seems to have a strong head on her shoulders and speaks her mind when she wants to.”

“You know Brittney?” Liam’s eyes narrowed.

Callie chuckled. “Well, a little. I walked in on her and Trent.”

Liam’s face paled. “Like…” His eyebrows rose.

“Yup. Your sister is a very enthusiastic lover.”

Liam laughed but shook his head as if to erase the statement from his memory. The first smile since dinner brightened his face, and she felt a little pride knowing she’d caused it to happen.

He adjusted on the sofa, a little closer. “I’m sorry. I hope you know that Brittney isn’t a bad person either, but I’m not happy with her right now.”

“I know. I loved Trent, but sometimes we love even when we’re faced with the fact that it isn’t right. It’s fear of facing the truth. It’s just plain fear.”
