“Thank you for noticing.”

I roll my eyes and push my glasses back up the bridge of my nose. “So, what’s your favourite colour?”

“If you laugh at me, I’m not giving you anymore orgasms.” My entire body flushes at his blasé retort. I’m not sure whether I love or hate his lack of a filter. “Do you understand?”

“Do you understand that the second you tell someone not to laugh, it becomes impossible for them not to?”

“Depends on whether that someone wants me to fuck them senseless or not.”

Every muscle south of my boobs twists tightly at the memory of how good he made me feel with his mouth and his fingers, and how desperately I want him to fuck me with his dick.

“Well? Do you want me to put my cock inside you, Cassidy?” he asks, pausing mid-step and pulling me to face him.

“I’m not going to laugh at you. What’s your favourite colour?”

“Purple. Lilac, to be precise.” Leif holds my stare, waiting for me to laugh or tease him.

“Wasn’t so hard, was it?”

“Come closer and see for yourself.” He brings his body flush to mine, angling his groin so the thick bulge presses against my belly.

He’s hard, big, and when he grinds into me, a white-hot flash of searing heat shoots from my middle to my extremities. The delicious thrill zings in my pores, bringing my body to life with nothing more than a lewd promise.

“What’s yours?”

“I like green,” I murmur into the crook of his neck.

A low chuckle rumbles in his chest. It’s velvety and warm in its arrogance. “It’s because of my eyes, right?”

My heart flutters in my chest, causing me to shiver deeper into him. “Obviously.”

“Don’t get all bent out of shape about it. I’m a handsome bastard.”

“Yeah, and I always knew that one day I would meet a guy with hazel eyes that would make me come like the Polar Express hurtling into the North Pole.”

“Fuck,” he booms with a raucous laugh. “I think I just fell a little bit in love with you.”

Those words shouldn’t make my chest squeeze so tightly. They shouldn’t have my stomach flipping, and they certainly shouldn’t light my soul up. But every syllable fills my lungs with hope as the words wrap themselves around every thread of my being.

“Just a little bit?” I ask teasingly.

His face sobers, every hint of his smile disappearing. “Cassidy, don’t ask questions you’re not ready to hear the answers to.”

Leif continues swaying us in slow circles on the near abandoned bridge overlooking the shimmering water. His response whirs around in my head while he softly hums “Blue Danube” in my ear.

This is the most magical moment of my life. It’s so perfect and everything I’ve needed for so long. Time stands still, and the world fades. The ground beneath my feet feels far, far away. I’m floating on an endless cloud with my heart thrumming to the rhythm he sets, my body buzzing from his touch indubitable affection.

There’s only ever been one person who’s made me feel like the centre of their universe. The longer I’m lost to Leif and our moment, the more it strikes me that maybe he’s right. Maybe something brought us together. I don’t know if fate played a part in it, but as the weight of the last year disappears, I’m certain Dad is somewhere close, pushing us together.

CHAPTER 14

LEIF

It feels a lot later than it is when Cassidy and I walk back to the hotel. The snow-lined streets are all but deserted, giving the city around us an eerie echo that’s got me holding her tighter.

“Thank you for today,” Cassidy says as we arrive at the hotel and head straight for the elevator. The lobby is busy while we wait for it to arrive.

“I’ve enjoyed every second of it with you.”
