“Everything aight?” Daniel wondered.

She glanced up and smiled at the foreigner before searching for Rafe. Obviously, he was somewhere visible. She spotted him with his friends, all seated in camping chairs, near a big oak tree.

He was too far away for her to know for sure, but she thought he was scowling in her direction.

Rafe:

What are you thinking, there girl?

Vivian:

That I need a new plan.

Rafe:

What about fated mates?

Everyone wanted a fated mate. Wasn’t that the dream? But all these people were here and excited about the Curusm because they’d given up on a fated mate.

Vivian:

I don’t think I have that luxury anymore.

By the tree, Rafe paced away from his friends, phone to his ear. A second later, her own phone buzzed in her hand.

“Don’t do anything drastic,” his voice came through soft but firm.

She smiled to reassure Daniel, but then turned away, attempting to gain a little privacy.

“Viv, I swore to you that I will protect you. Now I want a promise from you.”

“Okay?”

“Promise you’ll talk to me before you do anything drastic. Talk to me first.”

“Rafe, it’s okay.”

His sigh was labored. “If this is the route you want to go, that’s fine. But talk to me before deciding. This might not be the only option.”

“I don’t want to ruin your–”

“Not me. It’s not me, Vivian. Just promise me.”

“But–”

“I made you a promise. Now, promise me we’ll talk first.”

“Okay.”

“Promise.”

She laughed. Sometimes Rafe could be relentless. It was the alpha in him. “I promise.”

“Good. Talk later.”

He hung up before she could say goodbye.

Returning to Daniel, she slid her phone away, and resumed conversation with the hot Australian who wore leather bracelets, had a sexy accent, and was definitely flirting with her as he told her about his homeland.
