New plan.

She headed back through the kitchen. A few people gave her concerned glances, others asked questions about where she wanted certain foods. Her mother was rolling pieces of salami, while next to her, Anna was putting olives decoratively on a platter.

New plan.

For half an hour, she threw herself into her work, straightening decorations, directing workers, chatting with happy parents. She met a few visiting females who were excited for the Curusm, and a few males anxious about the event.

Hara attempted to corner her, but she dodged him, pretending to be busy with a task across the yard.

When her stomach had growled, she made herself a plate. She was a quarter of her way through a burger when a shadow fell over her. “Mind if I join you?”

Looking up, she saw a broad, dark-haired Australian. She’d spoken with him earlier. He was one of a handful of men who had flown internationally to join the Curusm—an alpha enticed by the exotic event.

“Of course you can.” Smiling, she shifted over, making space for him at the picnic table. His thigh brushed hers as he settled next to her.

“Terrific spread. It’s Vivian, right?”

“Yes. Daniel, right?”

His hand engulfed hers while they shook.

“The food has been good?”

He nodded, as he lifted a sausage to his mouth. “Excellent. It’s no roo burger,” he winked at her, “but it’ll do.”

“Roo burger?”

He laughed. “Kangaroo.”

Vivian’s eyes widened. “Kangaroo? You eat kangaroo?”

“Yea nah, some parts of Oz do. But I’m just pulling ya leg.”

“Oh.” She chuckled.

“Anything to get a pretty girl to smile.”

Vivian blushed.

As they ate, they chatted. He was polite, and able to hold a conversation without constantly talking about himself. He seemed genuinely interested in her. His smile was kind, and the accent was hot.

New plan, she thought to herself as her phone dinged.

“Excuse me,” she told him, pulling it from her pocket. Expecting her mother, the text from Rafe surprised her.

Rafe:

Who’s your new friend?

Vivian:

An alpha from Australia. Cute, right?

Rafe:

Sure.

Surprised by his lack of enthusiasm, she made a face at her phone.
