Chapter 1

what’s good for the goose

Melissa

I tap my foot against the kitchen floor, staring down the street, as the phone rings in my ear. Once. Twice.

“Hey, pretty lady,” I hear from the other end of the line.

Finally!

“Nathaniel Bryant! Where the hell are you? Wyatt and Alex will be here in just over an hour. I haven’t showered or finished cleaning, Luke pulled every action figure he owns into the living room, and the babysitter is running late.”

My husband’s chuckle comes through the line, and a sound that typically sends happy shivers down my spine raises my hackles. “Melly… breathe, sweetheart. I’m pulling onto our street now.”

I race up the stairs, sticking my head into the boys’ rooms as he answers. My relief leaves my body in a heavy exhale. “Good. I just checked on the boys. They’re playing video games in Jake’s room, so I’m hopping in the shower.”

The squeak of the faucet echoes off the stone walls of the newly remodeled shower, and the mechanical churn of the garage door vibrates through the floor beneath my feet.

“I’ll pick up downstairs and call Claire to check when she’ll be here. Go. Do whatever you need to do. I’m here now.”

“You’re too good to me, baby.”

“I know,” he says. “It’s mutual.”

I end the call at the same time his voice travels up the stairs for the boys to come down and help him clean up. Stepping into the shower, I stand underneath the rainfall shower head, leaning into the jet that pummels my lower back at the perfect height.

“This was worth every damn penny,” I murmur to myself.

The water sluices over my body, and as I massage shampoo into my scalp, my mind travels back. We just got back from our tenth anniversary trip, and it showed us things about ourselves that had simmered just underneath the surface for a decade.

Things we finally let bubble over in Mexico.

As I reminisce about the trip, my fingers trace the contours of my body.

The body that conceived, delivered, and fed two boys.

The one I work diligently to keep in shape.

The one my husband loves.

And loves to share.

“Melly!”

“Yeah?”

“Claire just picked up the boys.” My husband’s disembodied voice floats into the bathroom before Nate’s head peeks in the door. “Hey, sexy.”

I snicker. “Hey, baby.”

“I’d join you, but…”

I laugh full out at that. “But we’d fuck straight through dinner and dessert, right?”

“You say that like it’s a bad thing,” he says, waggling his brows.

“Not a bad thing. Not at all. But I’m excited to see Wy and Alex.”
