In a matter of days, I went from being a full-time student falling for a couple I saw a future with to a dropout with a broken heart. My whole world was turned upside down, and going through that much of a dramatic change left me feeling shaken to my core. I had no direction.

But now it feels like there’s something to look forward to and somewhere to go. There’s a sense of stability that’s returning to my life and it’s all thanks to Alvaro and Bex.

After having spent most of the day with Bex, I’m curled up in Bex and Alvie’s living room, working on my embroidery project with Milkshake at my feet, when my phone chimes.

Bex: I’m running late getting back from the store. I should be home in like 30 minutes.

Bex: Might miss sunset. Sorry.

Naomi: No worries. Maybe we try yoga under the stars. :wink

Bex: Not a bad idea, bunny.

Bex: See you soon.

Milkshake lets out a yip, and I glance away from my phone to see Alvie walk into the house.

“Hey, bun.” He smiles and my heart melts. “Bex said you’re coming for dinner. Thought I’d make tacos.”

“Oh. You don’t have to do that. You’ve been working all day and I’ve been lazing around like a duck on a pond,” I say, starting to struggle my way out of the comfiness of the couch.

“Don’t move, bunny,” he orders, his voice going deep. In a few strides, he’s in front of me, looking down at me with his piercing emerald eyes. “I’m making dinner. No arguments. I like taking care of you.”

I cock my head in confusion. “Why?”

“Because you’re mine. I take care of what’s mine.” He says it like it’s the simplest thing in the world.

With a quick peck of a kiss to my forehead, he turns and walks into the kitchen like he didn’t just totally tip my world upside down.

I toss my blanket to the side and crawl out of the couch to follow him.

“Alvie?” I ask hesitantly. “Why don’t you touch me?”

His head whips around. “What?”

“You don’t touch me. Why?”

“I touch you all the time, Nay,” he defends, his expression bewildered.

“No. Not like you touch Bex,” I reply quietly, my eyes lowering to the counter before me. “It makes me feel like you don’t want me.”

“What?” he bellows, rounding the kitchen island quickly to stand before me.

Suddenly, I’m twirled around and trapped in his arms. Alvaro’s face hovers a breath away from my own and my heart races off.

“Don’t ever say that again,” he growls.

“But . . .”

“No. You’re mine, bunny. Don’t ever think otherwise,” he breathes out and rests his forehead against my own. “Fuck. I told you I never want you to doubt that you’re wanted with me. Clearly, I’m doing a shit job.”

We breathe together for a moment as I take in his words before I break the silence.

“Why haven’t you fucked me?”

He rocks back and lets out a booming laugh. “Is that what this is about?”

I look at him, dumbfounded. “Well . . .”
