“Doing what?”

“Oh, fuck you. You know what,” I growl. “You can’t just keep edging me like this. It’s been too long and I need you.”

“But we have guests coming, birdie.”

“I know that. And it’s the only reason I’m letting you get away with it this time.” I glare at him. “But you owe me.”

“Good things come to those who wait,” he reminds, turning to leave me alone in the workshop, panting with need.

“Fucking husbands.”

An hour later, Alvie isn’t back with lunch yet, but two large SUVs and a U-Haul pull up to the ranch house.

Selene hops out of one of the SUVs from the passenger side and practically skips up to me.

“Bex!” she exclaims. “Where’s Naomi?”

“She’s down at the cabins,” I reply, slack-jawed.

“Well, that’s fine. I just texted her as we were pulling up to the ranch. So, she should be here soon.” She twirls on her heel.

“Selene? What’s with the U-Haul?” I ask.

“Oh! It’s Naomi’s stuff,” she answers simply, just as the woman herself comes down the drive in a 4-wheeler with Milkshake chasing behind.

“Selene!” Naomi calls out. “Why the hell is there a U-Haul here?”

“Cariña! It’s your stuff! We thought it would be easier to bring it all in one trip.”

Naomi’s entire face blanches at Selene. “Wh . . . Why did you . . . bring all of my stuff?”

“We’re moving you in, silly.”

“Yeah, but I didn’t think you were bringing everything.” She’s already starting to shut down.

“Naomi’s staying in one of the cabins right now,” I interject, trying to lighten the mood.

“Oh! Okay. We can unload what she wants there and then maybe the rest we keep in your garage or something?”

“Sure. We can do that,” I say, glancing over at Naomi worriedly, who’s now frozen in place.

I jog to catch up to Selene and grab her by the hand.

“What the hell, Selene?” I snap quietly.

Selene’s brow furrows and she glances over my shoulder to where Naomi still stands, Milkshake circling her in concern.

“It’s just stuff, Bex. She needs change. She’s stuck in a rut and she’s not doing anything about it.”

“Fine. But this is a little extreme. Don’t you think?”

“No. I don’t actually,” Selene counters, getting more frustrated. “She’s my best friend and she needs this. I’m not going to sit here and watch her fold into herself like this. She needs you.”

“You need to talk to her then. Explain and get her on board. She’s probably thinking that you’re kicking her out and abandoning her or something.”

Alvie’s truck pulls up just at that moment, pulling my attention away from the frustrated woman in front of me. “We’ll eat lunch, and you talk with her before we do anything else.”

“Of course I’m not abandoning her,” she defends. “Fuck, is that really what she thinks?”
