“Not the car.” She gave me a meaningful look.

“What?”

“He’s not crazy about us spending time together. I can’t imagine that he’d love the idea of us sharing a room for the night, let alone a bed.”

“Costa’s a jerk. You shouldn’t care what he thinks.”

“But I do. We’re dating and it's getting pretty serious. I don’t want to upset him over nothing.”

“Nothing?” The word rubbed me the wrong way and I put my fork down. “You can’t tell me that there aren’t some remnants of feelings left.”

“Luca...”

I knew I shouldn't have said anything, but it was so hard to keep quiet when I could clearly see she was with the wrong man. I held up my hands defensively. “Okay, okay. We’ll change the subject.”

“Good, thank you.”

The rest of our meal was filled with comfortable conversation. The kind of conversation that you could only have with someone you share a long history with. We laughed and reminisced as well as talked about the family and my new position as head enforcer.

Mira let out a yawn and stretched in her seat.

“My thoughts exactly.” I smiled at the adorable way she looked when she was sleepy. “We should get some rest. I’m just going to take a quick shower first. You go make yourself comfortable.”

“Okay.”

I hopped in the shower and washed away the day. Once I was done, I wrapped a towel around my waist to go back into the room to get a change of clothes while the bathroom steam aired out.

The bedroom was dimly lit with just a single lamp glowing from my side of the bed. Mira lay on her side facing away from the bathroom, but I caught her quickly closing her eyes shut as I glanced her way. I smiled to myself. If the little voyeur wants to take a peek at the goods, I’ll be sure to give her a show.

Instead of going back to change in the bathroom, I dropped my towel right there in the room and I could have sworn I heard a soft gasp. I had to turn my face from her just so she wouldn't see me fighting back a smile.

I turned off my lamp and climbed into bed facing her back. I wanted to touch her, to wrap my arms around her and hold her as we drifted off to sleep together and it killed me that I couldn't.

After several moments of silence, I whispered. “Mira?”

“Hmm?” she hummed sleepily.

“Are you happy?”

“Yeah, I’m happy.” Her voice was quiet and sleepy.

“Good. I want you to be happy.” Mira’s answer sounded believable, and I wanted to be content with her answer, but I couldn't fight the nagging question any longer. “Do you ever wonder...I mean...if things were different...do you ever think that maybe we could have been happy together?”

She rolled over onto her back and looked at me curiously. “Why do you ask?”

“I just...I think we would have been good together...in a different life, maybe?”

“Maybe, in a different life.” She smiled weakly up at me, and I couldn't resist. I needed to touch her. My hand found hers, timidly grazing her smooth skin before finally intertwining my fingers with hers.

She turned onto her side to better face me and I brushed a wayward strand of hair from her face. There was that dangerous attraction pulling us toward one another again. It was as though our lips contained magnets that helplessly pulled them to each other. Once we were close, the pull only grew, until our lips crashed into one another, and we were lost in a tangle of arms reaching and pulling each other closer.

We kissed uncontrollably, lost in the moment that felt more like a dream than waking life. My hands roamed up Mira’s sides as I pulled her over to straddle me and she followed eagerly.

Just before anything more could happen, Mira tried to pull back, but my desperation kept my grip on her locked tight.

“Luca,” she said quietly at first but repeated louder when I didn’t respond. “Luca.”

Her words finally cut through the haze, and I stopped, staring up at her for an explanation. “What’s wrong?”
