“I’m great. Just having dinner with the family.”

“Oh, that’s nice.”

“Yes. Is everything alright? It’s a little early for our nightly call.”

“Oh, yes. Everything is fine. I just have a business meeting around our usual time, so I thought I’d call before I go.”

“Isn’t it a little late for a business meeting?”

“It’s a business dinner but I’m sure there will be talking and after dinner drinks, so I didn’t want to risk missing our talk. I also wanted to remind you about your girls’ night with Giulietta tomorrow.”

“Trust me, I haven’t forgotten. I’m really looking forward to it.”

“Good. I’ll try to video call you beforehand to get a good look at my woman before you go out on the town.”

“That would be great.”

“I’m sorry, amore mio, but I have to run but I miss you.”

“I miss you too.”

I ended the call and pocketed the phone just in time to hear Elio start to cry from the dining room. He was finally awake, and I had been impatiently waiting to get to hold him, so I rushed back inside to beat the exhausted new parents in picking him up.

Chapter 10

Mira

I fastened the anklet to my black Gucci pumps and smoothed my hands over one of my favorite little black dresses.

I gave myself a final once-over when my phone rang with a video call from Stefano, and I quickly answered.

“Ciao,” I said excitedly.

“Ciao, amore mio.”

“I wasn’t sure you were going to call in time.”

“I wouldn’t miss it for the world. I’m sorry that I’m not there to formally introduce you to Giulietta myself but I’m sure you girls will hit it off wonderfully.”

“I’m sure you’re right.”

“Now, point the screen toward the mirror so I can see how beautiful you are.”

I blushed. “You don’t know that I’m beautiful yet, you’ve hardly seen anything but my face.”

“And it is a beautiful face.”

I let out a quiet chuckle and turned the phone around so that Stefano could look at me in the mirror.

“You’re right, I spoke too soon. You aren’t beautiful. You’re gorgeous.”

I blushed brighter. “Oh, you’re just being nice.”

"I mean it. You look stunning, amore mio."

"Are you sure the dress is okay? I don't look like I'm going to a funeral or anything?"

"Not at all. In fact, I think you should change just because I don't like that other men will see you in it without me by your side." His eyes danced with humor.
