“I have nothing to hide,” I stuttered.

“So, why the shaky voice? Guilty conscience?”

“You’ve just said you’ll kill me.”

“Only if I find out you’ve lied, otherwise you have nothing to worry about, do you?”

The room fell into silence. When a knock came at the door, making jump in panic .

“Enter,” Antonio stated firmly, the door opened and in stepped Denise.

“Hello dear, Mr Conti,” she said as she stood just inside the room.

“I need you to take Layla and get her working with the rest of the maids.”

“Of course, I will teach her, she’s in good hands and I’ll make sure she’s no trouble.”

I rose, without saying a word to Antonio and made my way over to her. She made her way out of the office, and I followed close behind, she made sure to shut the office door behind me, and then we made our way back to the kitchen where I was before Antonio found me.

“I think he’s taken a liking to you,” Denise said as we entered the kitchen.

“Oh, what makes you say that?” I asked her, intrigued.

“You’re still here and he’s giving you a job.”

“Oh, isn’t that something he normally would do?”

“No dear, there are a few things to learn about Mr Conti, don’t mess with him, he takes no nonsense, don’t ever betray him and if he sees anything untoward, your backside is in the line of fire. Anyway, I’ll show you down to the laundry, I’m head of housekeeping, and it will be me who you’ll come to if have any issues or questions about anything. You’ll be supervised at all times, and for the next few days I’ll be teaching you how to fold sheets, make beds, and clean the rooms to Mr Conti’s high expectations.”

How hard could it be to make the damn beds and clean a room, you didn’t need to be a genius, did you?

For the rest of the morning, Denise stayed with me showing me how Antonio expected the beds to be made and how the rooms were to be cleaned. Of course, I’d never made a bed in my life, so I fed her another lie as to why, as I was never at a place long enough. The thing was I had to remember all these lies as one slip-up and I was dead, I always knew my life was a ticking time bomb, but now it had speed up.

After the working day had finished, I made my way to my room as I was ready to drop and allow sleep to overtake me. I was just walking past a room when I heard my name being called, so I stopped, stepped back to the open doorways, and noticed Antonio sitting there.

“Come here,” he ordered.

I took a breath, and not wanting to annoy him I did what he asked. I found myself in a large sitting room that was decorated in creams and gold, there was a large television in a corner and a real log-burning fireplace, that had a portrait on the wall above it. Along the far wall, there was a bar with optics on the wall each filled with different types of alcohol. I found Antonio sitting on a huge black, leather sofa with his right ankle resting on his left knee, sipping a drink out of a crystal glass. He stared straight at me which made my stomach do somersaults, I quickly made my way over to him and stood before him.

“How are you settling in?” he asked in a gruff tone while never taking his piercing eyes off me.

“Good, I have so much to learn and thank you for the job.”

“Don’t thank me, I just thought that you’d need something to do until I figure out if you are telling me the truth or not.”

“What do you mean?” I asked as I tried to keep as calm as possible.

“Pour me another drink,” he ordered as he held the glass out.

I stepped forward reaching for it as we both stared intensively at one another, but he kept a firm hold of it and spoke.

“I do hope you’re telling me the truth; I don’t want to have to resort to some unpleasant measures.”

He then released his grip on the glass, and I moved quickly away from him. My heart was in my throat, he made me so scared and yet for some bizarre reason, I felt an insane attraction to him, it was wrong on so many levels.

Walking over to the bar I found a bottle of Macallan Classic Cut, I assumed that was what he was drinking so I poured him another drink as I walked back over, I feared he’d already figured out the truth and this was his ploy to unravel me. When I reached him, I passed the drink and just stood there.
