“I’ll take that as a yes,” he said, suddenly in motion. Before I could blink, I was once more seated on the desk and he was slipping my shoe onto my foot.

“Before you kick me to the curb, I’d really appreciate you allowing me to make a call. I didn’t bring my phone and need to get an Uber back to the hotel.”

“You’re not going to the hotel until you’ve eaten, and since you obviously can’t take care of that on your own, I’m taking you to dinner.”

I stared up at him as he finished buckling the strap and was slipping my other shoe on. “You don’t have to do that.”

“Maybe not, but that is what’s going to happen,” he said without a single note of doubt in his voice.

Any protest I was going to give evaporated when he began to unbutton his shirt. It was all I could do to snap my mouth shut and not drool when he left the bottom buttons alone and simply pulled the shirt off over his head. With every inch of skin revealed with the movement, I felt myself getting softer and softer. If I was like this now, what would happen if he dropped those pants? Forget whatever partner Jeanette had found for me. My nipples tightening and my pussy clenching told me I’d be sliding off the desk and dropping to the floor in a puddle of submissive goo at the feet of this man.

I watched as he opened a drawer in the cabinet behind him and pulled a shirt off a stack. I had to wonder if Max had been a Boy Scout as he was certainly prepared. As quickly as he’d disrobed, he shrugged into the new shirt, which was identical to the discarded one. He had it buttoned and tucked in the waistband of his trousers in the tine it normally took me to put one shoe on.

Tossing the dirty shirt into a basket I’d not seen before, he grabbed a black leather bomber jacket off a hanging rack and held out his hand. “Steak or seafood?”

It took me a second to process he was talking about food. Since I was pretty sure it would appear unseemly for me to answer I’d much prefer a nibble of Max, I said, “Steak, please. I eat a lot of seafood where I come from and I’ve heard Texas has great barbecue.”

“It does indeed,” he said, taking my hand and helping me off the desk. Bracing myself and telling myself not to blush when I saw the members playing proved to be unnecessary. Instead of going down the stairs I’d ascended with Jenny, Max led me smack dab into a wall. Well, okay, a wall with some rather cool secret panel, but then I saw nothing more than a narrow passageway and an even narrower staircase. We emerged from the corridor and after a short trip through an office that looked to be seldom used, we arrived at the front lobby.

Had he chosen this route to spare me views of naked men and women playing or because I’d failed whatever entrance exam that stupid form disguised as a questionnaire might have been? I found it didn’t really matter. Not being allowed to participate in person couldn’t stop me from playing out scenes in my head. Or later, when safely tucked into my lonely bed, dreaming of scenarios where the owner of the club played the main role, opposite me, of course. When a shout suddenly became audible as the inner sanctum’s door must have opened, I giggled and Max huffed and looked toward the sound. “Guess I need to rethink our soundproofing design.”

Not about to disclose my very private thoughts, I shrugged. “It’s not necessary on my account. Like I said, I think this place is pretty awesome,” I repeated.

He hesitated and then grinned. “I agree.” Max lifted my hand to his mouth and pressed a kiss on my fingers.

How I managed to remember to retrieve my things from my locker, I honestly couldn’t tell you. I did remember to thank Jeanette for her kindness as Max helped me into the awful coat I’d bought in order to hide my choice of attire from the prying eyes of the hotel staff.

“Let Master Logan know I’ve left,” he directed Jeanette.

“I will, Sir. Have a lovely evening, Mia. I hope you’ll come back soon,” Jeanette said.

“Thank you.” Impulsively, I reached out to hug her. “It was lovely to meet you.” She may not have managed to find me that playmate, but I was sure in a different life we’d have become friends anyway.

When Max led me outside and the door closed behind us, I knew I’d never forget the brief glimpse I’d been given of a world few ever got to see, even if I hadn’t truly experienced it. And maybe that was for the best. I could remember what I’d seen whenever I wanted. Meanwhile, I would set that aside and enjoy the time I had left with Max and that was a gift I’d never imagined.

CHAPTER 5

Max

“You mentioned you eat a lot of seafood,” I said as I flipped my signal to change lanes. “But you’ve yet to mention where you’re from.”

Granted, I knew exactly where she’d been born and raised, but so what? I had been intending to come clean myself, but she’d cut off that avenue with her hatred of men statement. I could practically see Nate’s eyes rolling, but if he or anyone else found my new approach offensive, they could sue me. I would tell her everything, but not while she still thought of me as the phantom who’d “abandoned” her. Hell, she hadn’t yet told me her real name.

“You’ve never heard of it.”

“You might be surprised. I’ve been a lot of places.” I glanced over to catch her tucking a pink curl behind her ear. I couldn’t help but grin at the sight of the stud in her lobe. She’d begged to get her ears pierced when her sister, Deanna, had flaunted the fact that she was older and allowed to wear real earrings while Marcie was still a baby. Marcie’s face had immediately screwed up in a little ball of fury even as she turned to state she was a big girl too and demanded she get earrings right then. She hadn’t, of course, but it appeared she’d finally won the battle as the diamond earring sparkled when catching a passing streetlight.

“Okay, Mr. Geography, if you guess right, you win. If you don’t, I do.”

“Ahh, so your affinity for playing games doesn’t just include sexual adventures,” I teased, loving the quick blush that ran up her neck. “I’ll play, but first, what exactly will I win when I guess correctly?”

“Are you always this cocky?” she asked, a smile tugging at her lips.

“Yep,” I answered honestly.

She laughed and shrugged. “I don’t know, what do you want to bet? How about the winner pays for dinner?”

“Not hardly. I’ve asked you to dinner and I’m paying. Pick something else.”
