“Why?”

“You would askme that?” He turned to face her. “I have not saidanything to her because she faces a lot. But I am a generationalcurse mother; with my history, I will likely inherit their genes. Mygrandfather and my father - the way they treated women worse thanslaves.

You think that I ambetter than Madison, that because I am from a supposedly old family-one with money, she does not deserve someone like me. But you are notseeing that she is better than I am. I don’t deserve someonelike her, and I constantly dread that she will wake up and discoverthat she could have done better.”

“Darling-”

“No.” Heshook his head. “Let me finish. She is carrying my seed insideher, and God knows I should have used something, but the truth is, Iwanted nothing between us - I could not bear not feeling her, all ofher, and now she is pregnant.

What if I turn out tobe like them? Am I going to introduce my child to sex at the earlyage of thirteen? I keep hoping that it’s a daughter becausethen I can tell myself that surely I would never do that sort ofthing to her.” He strode over to put away the cup.

“I love her,”He added quietly. “She is erasing the darkness inside me, andfor that, I am grateful. For the first time in my life, I am happy. She has given me hope-” He turned to look at her. “Accepther or don’t, but know this: I am going to stand by her onehundred percent.” He glanced at his watch. “I need tocheck in on her to see-”

“Have her overfor supper on Sunday.” Elizabeth interrupted softly, her eyesshimmering. “I would like to get the opportunity to greet herface to face and welcome her to the family.”

He stared at her fora minute as if unable and unwilling to believe she meant it.

“Please.”She held out a hand to him. “I would like my son back where hebelongs.”

“And you arenot just saying that?”

“No.” Sheshook her head and approached him. “I love you, and I willsurely like her with time. Bring her to supper, and let’s makethis right.”

Chapter 14

“What do youthink?” She asked anxiously.

“About what?”

“The outfit,Brennan. Is it appropriate? Do you think I should wear somethingelse?”

Putting away thefile, he gave her his full attention, an amused look on his face.“You look quite virginal.”

“Oh, why do Ibother!”

“You areadorable and very chaste. The white cashmere is perfect. After dinnerwith Mother, perhaps we should see if you can sing in the choir.”

He broke off thelaugh, swiftly getting up from his position on the sofa to catch herwhile taking the dress off.

“Let go.”

“No.”Turning her to face him, he examined the perfectly made-up face, andthe usually wild curls brushed ruthlessly into a chignon at the napeof her neck. Discreet diamonds winked at her lobes, and she wore thenecklace he had bought her.

“You aredriving yourself crazy over nothing. She already knows you, darling;it’s not like you are meeting her for the first time. Don’tyou think the white dress is a little too over the top?”

“I ammeeting her for the first time as your wife, and I already know whatshe thinks of me.”

“She is willingto meet you halfway, and I will be there with you.”

“To hold myhand?”

“If necessary.”Turning away from her, he plucked out a stunning wool the color ofripe plums with a scooped neckline and fitted bodice. “This isperfect.”

“It’sgoing to show my boobs.”

“Darling, please.” Putting the dress on the vanity chair, he helped heroff with the one she had on. “And leave your hair loose. Ihappen to love it that way. I am the one you are supposed to betrying to impress, remember?”

“I thought Ialready did that several times in bed.” Turning toward themirror, she stared at her reflection and had to admit that the dresswas stunning on her.
