Elizabeth examinedthe place setting again as the maids waited for her approval. Her sonand his new wife were expected to arrive any minute now, and shewanted everything to be perfect. She had promised her son that shewould be on her best behavior and meant every word.

“He could havedone worse.” Allan had told her blithely while they were in bedlast night.

“She was notthe person I would have chosen for him.”

“Of course not.She is not from your society.”

“It happens tobe your society, too.”

“Much to myregret.”

“As soon asthey are here, I will tell you when to start serving the firstcourse.”

“Yes, ma’am,”Elaine said with a bow.

“Thesefresh flowers from the greenhouse are a nice touch.”

“Ms. Connelly -I mean, Ms. Madison loves flowers.”

Elizabeth turned tolook at the woman who had been with the family for too many years tocount. “That’s right, she is Mrs. Connelly too. I am sureshe would not mind being called Ms. Madison.”

She looked around theelegant dining room and swept out with the maids following her. “We will have cocktails in the living room. The fire is blazing insidethe hearth, and everything looks warm and cozy.” She turned tolook out the window just in time to see her son’s vehicle.

“They arehere.”

Madison reached forhis hand when they exited the vehicle, and he handed the key fob tothe butler. Aware of her nerves, Brennan had engaged her inconversation for half an hour, trying to put her at ease, but hecould see that the nerves had returned.
