He bit back a grin atthe harassed expression on her face. “I think the phrase iswelcome to the family.”

Brooke had adifficult time biting back the smile at his cheekiness. “Whathappened to Dr. Graham?”

“He has a sickMom and is moving to Florida to care for her. I am afraid I jumpedthe gun because he is supposed to be getting in touch with youtomorrow. I guess I can chalk it down to enthusiasm on my part. Idon’t expect you to roll out the red carpet, throw me aparty-”

“You are amoron.”

“Is that asmile I see?” His amber eyes twinkled, making her aware of hisimmense charm. The man was lethal. Before responding, she saw thestunning woman wearing emerald green approaching.

“Your date mustbe wondering what is keeping you.”

“She is justa...”

“Save it.”Finishing the drink, she rose and, giving the woman a faint nod,walked away.

“Who wasthat?”

“Dr. BrookeCampbell. She runs the clinic downtown.” He had to forcehimself not to follow her departure and tamped down his annoyancethat Wendy had interrupted them.

“Isn’tthat the place you have been going to?”

“Yes.” Heclipped. Closing his eyes briefly, he expelled a breath. “Ihave to get out of here.”

“I was thinkingthat we could go back to my place.”

“Not a goodidea. I am not good company tonight, sorry.”

Wendy kept the smileon her face as she tucked her hand through his arm. She had seen howhe looked at her when they stood together and watched them togetherbefore she came forward. The woman was exquisite, and Cooper wasinterested; she had identified the expression on his face.

Chapter 6

“I broughtcoffee and cake.” He gave her a disarming smile as he cartedthe goodies in. “I figured we could use the sugar rush andcaffeine.”

Barely sparinghim a glance, Brooke went on into the waiting room.

“I think I amgrowing on her.” He turned a devastating smile on Miranda andbrightened her mood.

“Don’tmind her. I hope there is a cup for me.”

“Of course.”He handed her one and opened the white cardboard box; he waited untilshe had taken a donut out before closing it.

“I suppose Iwill just have to take this to her.”

“Put it in heroffice. I heard the good news: you will permanently cover for Dr.Graham.”

“I will.”With another smile that had her beaming, he went to her office,stopping short when he saw her sitting on the edge of the desk.

“Here yougo.”

Looking up from thepatient’s files, she tensed as he came into the small space,crowding her in.

“You don’thave to bring food.”

“I wanted to.”He peered over her shoulder. “Anything I should know about?”

She started to openher mouth to tell him to mind his own business but decided againstit. “Mrs. Crosby is suffering from chronic osteoarthritis inboth knees and refuses to go and live with her daughter. I haveprescribed something for the pain, but it’s not enough.”

“Is shehere?”
