I straighten and put my phone in my purse.

Now that I’m out here, I might as well grab a change of clothes from home before I head back to my mates. E.A. probably takes the world’s longest showers, anyway.

I call the office and leave a message on the machine, telling them I’ll be back soon.

Then, I get moving. I want to be in and out of my apartment as quickly as possible.

The less time I spend in that place, the better.

Chapter Fifty-Five

E.A.

I go back over the conversation I had with Leanne this morning, trying to figure out where it went wrong. It’s too hard to tell. I made her mad a couple of times, and, apparently, I didn’t recover from that response like I thought I had. I thought she forgave my brusque manner, but she must have still been angry.

“Ask Echo to call her,” I tell Spencer as we make our way toward her apartment.

“He won’t have her number.”

“Her resume is downstairs, in the office, on my desk.”

“We left our Omega in the apartment, and now you want him to go outside into the back alley so he can get a phone number?” Spencer doesn’t sound pleased.

He has a point, when I think about it.

It’s easy to believe our home is safe, but that doesn’t mean it is.

“Sorry, I’m not thinking straight.”

“Clearly,” Spencer grumbles.

He pushes his way faster through the crowds, giving me a clear path behind him.

I hurry along at his back until we get to the quieter section that’s closer to the apartment blocks where Leanne’s been living. It’s rare that I leave the apartment, but it felt wrong to send anyone else when I’m the one who caused our new fated mate to bolt.

So, I follow Spencer as he leads us to the right building.

“Maybe you should wait out here,” he says.

“I need to apologize to her.”

I’m not coming all this way to stay out here while he convinces her to come back.

“Do you think that’s the smart move while she’s …” he trails off as the building door opens, and our mate walks out dressed in fresh clothes, a backpack slung over her shoulder.

He straightens as she comes down the building’s front steps.

She gives us a wry smile as she approaches. “I’m guessing no one got the message I left?”

“Message?” I ask, glancing at Spencer.

He shrugs. Clearly, he doesn’t know what she’s talking about, either.

“Well, I guess I left it on the office line, since I don’t actually have any of your personal cell numbers.” She hands Spencer her backpack. “I was grabbing some stuff and coming back. Secret called while E.A. was in the shower. The call cut out and she sounded worried, so I had to make sure she was okay.”

“How is she?” Spencer asks.

Surely, she’s fine, going by how relaxed Leanne looks.
