“Better? You solved a case that people thought was fake.”

“I needed to see for myself,” he says, shrugging. “I knew if I walked around the city, I could find that alley. I refused to give up until I did. It was solved out of sheer determination. That’s all.”

“I don’t know E.A. I don’t think most people would have considered going to all that trouble. I think that weird brain you keep complaining about makes you think differently. I think it gives you something that other people don’t have.”

“Yeah, social exhaustion and a dislike for crowded places,” he jokes.

“No. Insight, persistence, determination. You’re looking at it all wrong.”

I walk away, going to Secret’s door and knocking.

He follows slowly, hanging back a little, looking awkward.

Secret probably will tell me he’s weird. Too bad, I like it.

Chapter Fifty-Seven

Leanne

Cassidy opens the door and starts to smile at me. I can tell he’s ready to invite me inside, when he spots E.A. slightly behind me, and his expression turns suspicious. He looks my fated mate over before he turns his attention back to me.

“Hey, Leanne, Secret told me you were coming. She didn’t say you were bringing a friend.”

Considering he’s home alone with two Omegas, I can understand his less than enthusiastic response to his mate’s mother bringing an Alpha friend over. He doesn’t know E.A., and he would never let a strange Alpha into his house.

“This is E.A. Shultz. He’s one of my true mates. I probably should have mentioned that when I spoke to Secret, but she was kind of worried about her friend, and to be honest I’ve barely had time to process it myself.”

Like I suspect, he glances at my throat.

No mark. More suspicion levelled at us.

“Here’s the thing,” I add. “I’ve taken a job at his detective agency, and for my first task I need to make sure the human trafficker we’re trying to catch doesn’t know I have mates who would absolutely tear him apart if he tried anything with me. I’m bait. So, yeah …”

“I’ll get Secret,” he says, closing the door.

Okay. That’s a first.

“Maybe I should wait outside,” E.A. murmurs.

“He’s just being cautious. You’d be the same.”

He nods when I look at him.

It’s not really a bad thing.

I’m glad Secret’s mates take protecting her so seriously.

It makes me like them more. I know I can trust them to take care of her.

Secret opens the door, Cassidy at her side.

“Leanne, Cassidy just told me …” she starts, her eyes widening when she looks at E.A.

She closes her eyes for a second and looks back at me. “Did you seriously meet your mates?”

I nod. “In fact, one of them is going to email Beth’s class list to you. Toshi Takahashi. He should be doing it any time now.”

“Toshi Takahashi?” Cassidy asks, his eyebrows jumping.
