I’m guessing he paid special attention to the bad ones.

“Sure,” I tell him, sending Toshi the message.

“I want to come when you go …” Secret starts.

“We agreed when Seth and Ryan left that we weren’t going anywhere,” Cassidy interjects.

“But Leanne has Alphas. We’ll be well covered.”

“We can’t guarantee that,” E.A. blurts. “We don’t know enough about this guy.”

I could kiss him right now. I don’t want Secret anywhere near any of these creeps.

I’m glad she’s doing her degree through an online course, because I had no damn idea how awful her classmates were when she started at Goldcrest. We have at least one guy to look into with anger-management issues, one who has a past history of starting fires for fun, and another who once broke a teacher’s fingers in a vice.

“It’s Beth. I need to help her,” Secret pleads.

“Secret, we don’t even know if any of these guys know anything. We could be about to spend hours talking to a bunch of guys who know nothing about what happened to your friend. It’s better if you stay here with Cassidy where it’s safe.”

She frowns at me. “Seriously? But what if … What if one of them is the one who … did something?”

“We’ll know,” I promise her. “E.A. is the best in the city, and I want to make sure we find Beth.”

My phone buzzes and I find a message from Spencer when I look.

“Dessert Stall Guy knows nothing,” I announce, leaving out the part where Spencer said the kid was so freaked out that he started sobbing. “Can you check in with her roommate? Make double sure she hasn’t come back yet?”

Secret sighs. “She texted me five minutes ago, asking me for any updates. This really isn’t like Beth. I should have known something was wrong sooner.”

“You couldn’t have known,” Dylan says, taking her hand in his. “She’s gone a day without texting you before. That isn’t unusual.”

“We’ll get started,” I tell her, rubbing her shoulder. “Let us know if you get any updates, and we’ll do the same.”

She nods. “Thanks, Leanne.”

I get up, and E.A. follows my lead.

Cassidy sees us out, and an awful feeling washes over me as I think about what we’re leaving the apartment to go do.

I remember the scowling face of that guy with the ranting posts and the anger management problems, and I feel sick to my stomach.

I hope to hell I’m not going to have to tell my daughter her best friend is dead.

Chapter Fifty-Eight

Toshi

Echo doesn’t seem too worried when Spencer and E.A. go rushing out to look for Leanne. I don’t know how he can feel so relaxed. I can’t stop pacing around, feeling useless.

“She went home for clothes,” he murmurs, moving the pillows and gazing over at me.

“E.A. seemed completely freaked out.”

“It’s like you’ve never met him. He freaks out at least once a week, usually over nothing.”

“You think this is nothing?” I ask, as I try to understand why Leanne would leave without telling us.

“I think it’s going to turn out to be something completely understandable that E.A. got worked up over because of some kind of misunderstanding.” He sounds completely rational, and maybe he’s right, but knowing that doesn’t stop my stomach from churning. He sits up. “They’ll be back soon, and she’ll be with them, and everything will be okay. I promise.”
