He’s a plain looking guy. A straight-A student who does extracurriculars and organizes charity events. No marks on his file for anything bad. I seriously doubt he’s who we’re looking for. I glance at E.A.

“We can speak to him,” E.A. says. “Not all bad guys look bad on paper.”

I get out my phone and make a note of his name and phone number.

“Okay, keep looking,” I tell Secret.

She flips through a few others, giving all the male students a good look before discarding them.

The next one she stops at looks a bit less wholesome.

He’s pissed off in his picture and he’s got a bunch of suspensions and warnings on his file, all related to angry outbursts. He’s apparently in anger management therapy.

“Oh my God,” Secret says.

“Definitely speaking to him,” E.A. says.

“What about the other guys?” I ask. “The ones she ditched before?”

“Oh, um, there are kind of a lot of them,” Secret admits. “She has a hard time saying no, and she has a harder time breaking up with them.”

It sounds like a recipe for disaster.

Going by E.A.’s expression, I think he’s having similar thoughts.

We go through the list, and I take names and numbers.

There are actually three who sound awful on paper.

And five who probably wouldn’t consider hurting a fly.

“Can we look for these guys on social media and see what they’ve been doing for the last couple of days?” I ask, hoping we can narrow it down a little more.

E.A. nods at me. “Look for comments about Beth, too.”

Secret pulls up some social media pages and starts typing the guy’s names in, one by one.

We watch as she brings up the first page.

The guy is marked as being on vacation this whole week.

“Score him off the list,” E.A. says.

Others haven’t been updating their profile.

One has a girlfriend according to his latest post, and she’s not a short girl with blonde hair named Beth.

The worst one in the pile has been posting about women being bitches.

I get serious incel vibes from his ranting posts, and they’ve been well liked by a lot of other guys.

He doesn’t mention Beth by name, and he doesn’t get specific in his posts, but he definitely seems to have a lot of hate for women.

“We need to check into this guy,” I tell E.A. “The sooner, the better.”

He nods. “Yeah. Can you ask Toshi to find out his term time address? The one on his file is in Cressidan Grove. He could be commuting, but we should find out for sure.”

Clearly, he absorbed more information from the files than I did when we looked at them.
