“Ugh. Shoot me now,” Beth groans.

My mate steps out of the house and raised voices start up, one male and one female.

This whole thing just got a little more complicated.

Chapter Sixty-One

E.A.

Marcus Hamilton Senior narrows his eyes at me as I step out of his house, a stranger who definitely isn’t a friend of his nineteen-year-old son’s. He’s an Alpha, as I suspected, and he’s built like he could still be active in the military.

“Who the hell are you?” he snaps at me. “And what are you doing in my house?”

“I don’t care who he is, I’m calling the police,” his wife adds, putting her cell phone to her ear.

She’s a Beta, which explains why Marcus isn’t an Alpha like his father. She’s a petite little thing compared to her husband, but it seems like she makes their decisions.

“That would be helpful. We were just about to call the police,” I tell her. “I’m E.A. Shultz. I’m a private detective from Cressidan City. I was sent out here to locate Beth Moore.”

The look they exchange at the mention of Beth’s name is telling.

They know who she is. Or at least, they think they do.

“That’s our son’s girlfriend,” Marcus Senior blurts. “What do you mean, you were sent here to locate her?”

“I knew that girl was trouble,” his wife mutters, shaking her head as she takes the cell phone away from her ear. “What did she do? Is she a drug dealer? A prostitute?”

“She was a missing person,” I tell them. “Your son had her tied up in his closet.”

Marcus Senior’s expression darkens, but it doesn’t feel like his anger is directed my way.

The kid’s mother’s mouth drops open, and then her face turns red, and she glowers at me.

“That’s a blatant lie!” she snaps. “Marcus would never …”

“Before you try to tell me what your son would never do,” I interrupt. “I’d ask you to take a look at his social media accounts, and then maybe have a look inside his closet.”

Marcus Senior lets out a sigh. “We’ve seen his posts. I thought they were just … I didn’t think he meant anything by them. Is Beth … Is she okay?”

I nod. “She could probably use some water and she’ll need to be checked over by EMTs, but she doesn’t seem to be in any physical pain.”

“Of course she isn’t in pain!” Mrs. Hamilton snaps. “She’s a drama queen. I would bet my bottom dollar she hid in his closet after they studied together on Wednesday night, instead of going home like she promised, and she faked this whole thing for attention.”

“Listen to yourself, Wendy,” her husband says in a measured tone. “You know that’s not true.”

He looks back at me, more irritable than angry now.

“Where is he?”

“We think he ran out here when we were freeing Beth,” I tell him, knowing I shouldn’t have left him on his own. It’s not easy to think rationally when I’m around Leanne. All I want to do is make sure she’s safe. Nothing else matters.

“He ran away,” Marcus Senior mutters, shaking his head.

He sounds incredibly disappointed in his son.

“Is Beth still inside?”

I nod. “My partner is with her.”
