“Are you okay?” I ask, as I untie her wrists.

She shakes her head. “That ass …”

She starts to cough, and then clears her throat loudly before she says, “He made me watch that how to be a good old fashioned traditional woman shit for like ever.”

I glance at the TV, and back at her.

She sighs. “I think my legs are dead. Can you carry me to the bathroom? I seriously need to pee.”

“E.A.?” I ask. “Can you help me get Beth out of this stupid closet?”

She laughs and winces. “Hah! First time I’ve ever thought about coming out of a closet. First time I’ve been stuffed into one by a creepy asshole, too, I guess. Man, I really need to pee. Like sooo bad. Please, don’t let me pee my pants. I like these jeans too much to throw them out.”

Thank God, she’s okay.

“My mate is going to help lift you out, okay? We came here together to get you.”

“I hope it’s Seth,” she says. “No offense to Dylan, but I don’t really want to be dragged across the floor to get to the bathroom.”

Clearly, she thinks I’m Secret. I guess we do look alike, and she’d have no reason to think her friend’s mother might be the one to come to her rescue. She’s probably also a little tired and wonky from being stuffed into this closet and left here for a couple days.

“Actually, Secret’s back home,” I tell her. “It’s Leanne. This is E.A.”

“I’m not really sure about the words that are coming out of your mouth, bestie, but Seth looks kind of weird. Did he lose a bunch of muscle and gain like ten years of a hard life?”

I try not to laugh, but a little snort escapes me anyway. I don’t know how this girl manages to be so funny when she should be traumatized. E.A. carries her out of the room, and I follow him.

Finally, I can use the phone I’ve had in my hand for the past half hour, and it’s for a good reason.

I text Secret and tell her we’ve found Beth. She’s alive, and well, and cracking jokes.

One bathroom trip later, and we head downstairs to find the front door lying open.

“Stay there,” E.A. murmurs.

He moves ahead and checks the rooms at either side of us.

Beth rests her head against my shoulder. I keep my arm around her waist and support her weight.

She’s small and slim enough that I think I could probably carry her if I needed to.

“How are you feeling?” I ask quietly.

“Not gonna lie,” she murmurs. “My legs are like jelly, and I almost want to pass out. Honestly, though, if that asshole showed his face, I could easily find the strength to knock him on his ass.”

She lifts her head and looks around as E.A. comes back to where we’re standing at the foot of the stairs.

“It looks like he might have taken off.”

“Typical,” Beth grumbles.

“We should call the cops.”

“Oh, God,” Beth moans. “This is so embarrassing.”

E.A. steps toward the door, and I hear an engine stopping outside a second later.

He looks back at me. “I think his parents are home.”
