There’s so much evil in the city. So much darkness.

It’s hard not to let it in. It’s impossible not to let it affect you.

Spencer is a boy scout. His heart is made of pure gold, shining so bright the whole world can see it.

He’s always been that way. The ugliness of the world only makes him fight harder to see good prevail over evil. He doesn’t let the darkness seep in.

I don’t know how he does that.

I switch on the office light and close the door behind me.

It would be just as bad to pretend the file doesn’t exist as it would be to keep going like this.

If I’m cutting this cord, I have to pass the case to someone else who might find a way to someday take Harlan West down. I search through my contacts, looking for the right person with the right connections.

It takes a while for my gaze to fall on Leanne’s file, under Anchor West’s.

The answer is literally right in front of me, in the form of the research I conducted on her daughter’s mates, and the work they’re doing right now.

The Alpha Coalition.

The group feels overly ambitious. It has Spencer’s kind of energy all over it. But I can’t deny that they’re making some real progress. They’ve already made moves that helped to keep one of the country’s most prolific traffickers behind bars.

If anyone else can take this over, it’s them.

I find their website and send an email, using a new alias and giving out a new burner phone number.

I’ve barely activated the phone when I get the call.

“You have information for us?” A gruff voice asks.

“I do,” I tell him. “It’s sensitive, and it’s not enough to get cops involved.”

“I’m assuming if it was, you would have gone to them.”

“Maybe, but this guy has a few local cops in his pocket.”

“Sounds like he’s one of the bigger fish.”

“He could be the biggest.”

“When can you meet one of our guys?”

“Today works.”

The sooner I wash my hands clean of this, the better.

“Give it an hour and go to the Sunken Skull bar. Order a Red Rum and I’ll find you.”

“I’ll be there.”

I hang up and take the phone apart, ready to go out and toss the parts down a storm drain.

I gather the file together first, making sure everything is there. It’s not much, but it’s more than anyone else has on Harlon West. There’s probably a slim chance he’ll ever be stopped, but if it’s possible, I’d put my bet on this coalition before I’d trust the local PD.

I can’t believe I’m about to do this, but I know it’s what needs to be done.

This file has meant too much to me for too long.
