I remind myself he’s a good guy, and some of the tension releases from my body.

He helped save my life after Frank Palmer got done stabbing me, but his Alpha vibes are also seriously heavy.

He’s possessively protective of my daughter, though, and I know the lengths he would go to in order to keep her safe.

He killed a group of Colvindale Alphas to save Dylan, and by the sounds of the new mission, he’s going to end up killing a bunch more of those assholes. The only difference is this time he won’t have a recently deceased serial killer to blame for the deaths.

I don’t know how they intend to get around that, but I’m pretty sure they’ll think of something.

He gestures for me to go into the kitchen ahead of him.

I find out Secret has saved a seat for me.

I sit down and tell myself the wine in the food won’t be a problem.

That the taste won’t make me crave a bottle I end up leaving my apartment to buy.

That I won’t end up coming home with a whole crate of the stuff because there was a deal on the cheapest crap I could find, and it would have been dumb not to buy it by the bucketload.

That I won’t end up drinking myself into a stupor in that apartment that looks like the one I almost died in.

“Sorry,” Cassidy murmurs as he puts down a plate of something that looks decidedly different from what Secret has. “I didn’t realize you had any dietary requirements before I decided on what to make. I should have asked.”

“Dietary requirements?” Secret asks quietly, her face flushing when I look at her.

“I quit drinking alcohol a while back,” I admit, realizing she might not have seen it for what it was.

Ryan didn’t. He was shocked when I admitted it to him.

People don’t always recognize the things that are right in front of them.

I didn’t know it was a problem until I hit rock bottom.

Then, it was so obvious I didn’t understand how I couldn’t have seen it sooner.

I’d spent so long burying my head in the sand that it was harder to look up than I knew.

“This is so nice of you,” I tell Cassidy. “You didn’t have to go to this trouble.”

“It was no trouble. We always have extra food in this house.”

“Well, it looks lovely,” I admit.

He finishes serving up the rest of the plates and sits down next to me.

I don’t feel a hint of tension with Cassidy. He’s too much of a sweetheart. He radiates with inner strength, and he looks like he would win a fight if he was pressed, but he doesn’t flaunt his muscles and I can’t imagine him ever wearing an intimidating stare. He’s too laid back, too thoughtful.

It balances out Seth’s excessive moodiness and makes for a much more relaxed atmosphere.

Dylan’s vibrant personality helps, too. A few bites into his meal and it seems like he’s had enough to satisfy his hunger. He raises his glass and clears his throat dramatically.

“Secret passed her first exam today,” he announces, with a proud smile. “Ninety-five percent.”

She flushes bright red. “It’s not a big deal, really.”

“To the first success of many,” Cassidy tilts his glass of water at her.

She looks like she could burst into flames with the embarrassment.
