I believe he’ll succeed in taking care of those Alphas.

And I know Secret won’t be anywhere near him when that’s happening.

I don’t need to know anything else.

“Now, can we put this away?” Ryan asks Dylan, eyebrow raised.

Dylan lets out a sigh. “We don’t get to be there to watch those Alphas get what they deserve.”

“You get to be here, where it’s safe,” Ryan says.

I don’t know if it’s my imagination, but something feels a little different between them.

I know Secret shares Dylan with her Alphas. It only makes sense, considering they’re both Omegas.

As far as I’m aware Ryan only has eyes for Secret, but right now those eyes are fixed on her Omega mate, and I swear I can see something like longing burning in them. Dylan has a dreamy expression that melts away when he breaks his gaze away from the Beta and looks back at the plans. He smiles wistfully as he turns away and picks up a cardboard tube.

I glance at Secret, but she’s frowning at the plans, oblivious to whatever’s going on between her mates. It’s not my business, really. I should forget I saw anything.

I don’t even really know what I saw.

“What if the Alphas decide to show up to get early?” Secret asks, looking at Ryan.

“That’s unlikely,” Ryan says, “But we have a couple of local Alphas keeping an eye on things. They’ll let us know if anything starts to happen earlier than we expect.”

“Colvindale isn’t exactly close by,” Secret murmurs.

“It’s not,” Ryan agrees, “But we have Alphas who live closer to the academy who can get there fast if they’re needed. Everyone we vetted to help knows how urgent that kind of situation would be. It’s all under control.”

Secret takes in a deep breath and relaxes on the exhale. She nods and gives him a smile.

“I just wish I could do more …” she starts.

“You’re already doing enough,” I tell her. “More than enough.”

She presses her lips together, clearly ready to tell me to back off.

“We’ll need you when it comes to getting the Omegas settled,” Ryan adds. “It’ll help them to have Omegas here reassuring them that Goldcrest is different now.”

“Yeah, sure,” Secret grumbles.

The door creaks open and Seth leans into the room.

He looks so much like Ryan that it’s kind of scary.

“Dinner’s ready,” he tells us.

“That was fast,” Ryan murmurs.

“It smells so good,” Secret admits, thankfully no longer complaining about being left out of the risky part of the rescue mission she’s managed to set up with her mates.

“It does,” Dylan adds. “And I feel like I haven’t eaten all day.”

He takes Secret’s hand and leads her out of the room. Ryan follows and I move after him.

Seth stays by the door and closes it behind me.

I feel a little nervous with Seth at my back, just because he’s an Alpha and he’s acting like one.
